Kael stopped fiddling with the medallion and looked straight ahead. There was nothing in his line of sight except the varnished wooden wall. He sat patiently, giving Eryn time. Deep down, he believed the mercenary wouldn't lie to him.
Now that he thought about it, had Eryn ever lied to him? During the times they traveled together, was there a single moment when he had? Kael closed his eyes briefly, arriving at his answer.
Even if the young mercenary had lied, what harm had it ever caused him? Hadn't Eryn been the one who killed the demon in the Forest of Unheard Prayers? Wasn't he the one who paid for their rooms, their food, and even brought a horse to make their journey easier?
Kael imagined what traveling alone would be like again. He wouldn't struggle, perhaps—but it would be the same monotonous, lonely road. He had been alone for so long, so returning to that kind of life would be easier for him.
