Chapter Fifty two

I didn't move an inch to do as he said. My fingers were trembling in a nervous mess. Why was I so panicked if he recognized me or not? It wasn't as though I needed his permission to be here… I wasn't his groomed pet!
These words were only stuck in my head, in reality, I wasn't courageous enough to yell them at him.
The side of my face remained flattened to his chest, and I could hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
"Should I guess you must be deaf as well? I asked you to take it off!" He snapped, impatience oozing from his voice. Where was he in such a hurry to go?
Poor me.
Just as I touched my mask, prepared for whatever was to happen, either by sheer luck or a miracle, the tangled edge slipped free from his shirt.
Taking two quick successive steps backward, I inhaled a sharp breath, stuffing my lungs filled with oxygen. I could almost weep aloud my relief.
That had been so close!
