The Waverider exited the temporal jump, not into the usual serene hum of spacetime, but into a maelstrom of chaos. Earth-1. Or what was left of it. The sky was an angry, swirling vortex of red anti-matter energy. Buildings crumbled into dust, devoured by the consuming wave. Screams echoed across the ravaged cityscape, abruptly silenced as entire blocks vanished into oblivion.
"Good lord," Professor Stein breathed, horrified, watching the destruction unfold on the viewscreen. "It's... it's already here."
"The Anti-Monitor moves fast," Adam stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. His Time Travel Awareness (100%) was overwhelmed by the sheer, raw agony of a dying Earth. He saw the threads of countless lives, billions of them, abruptly severed. But he also saw the one thread, burning brighter than any other, leading them to a specific point of heroic defiance. "Rip, set a course for Star City. Specifically, the old, abandoned Queen Consolidated building. He's there. The Paragon of Willpower. And he's making his stand."
Barry Allen, his face pale, turned to Adam. "Oliver? He's still here? But... the Anti-Monitor's forces..."
"He won't leave," Adam cut him off, knowing the future, knowing the inevitable. "Not while there's still a single soul to protect. This is his city. This is his stand. We need to be there. Not to save him, Barry. But to witness. And to ensure the right people are there to survive what comes next."
The Waverider materialized on a rooftop overlooking the crumbling husk of Star City. The ground team, including Sara, Mick, Ray, and now J'onn J'onzz in his true form, disembarked, their faces grim. Below them, on the ground level of what remained of the Queen Consolidated building, Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, was fighting.
He wasn't alone. Batwoman, Kate Kane, fought at his side, her grapple gun and martial arts a blur. Lyla Michaels, Harbinger, moved with a supernatural grace, guiding vulnerable civilians towards a makeshift portal that flickered with strange energy – an escape route provided by the Monitor. But they were utterly, hopelessly outmatched. Swarms of grotesque, shadowy creatures – Shadow Demons – poured from the anti-matter sky, overwhelming them.
Oliver, despite being surrounded, despite the hopelessness of the situation, fought with a furious, defiant intensity. His bow was a blur, arrows finding impossibly precise targets, exploding with unexpected force against the demons. His Willpower/Determination was a tangible force, burning so brightly that Adam could almost feel it, a blazing beacon against the encroaching darkness. Every punch, every arrow, was an act of pure, unadulterated resolve. He was bleeding, battered, but utterly unyielding.
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Emotion Lock-on: Oliver Queen (Willpower/Determination/Archery). Proximity: Optimal. His unwavering resolve in the face of oblivion is peaking. This is the moment. Prepare for skill acquisition. ]
"He's giving everything," Sara whispered, watching her friend, tears welling in her eyes. "He's not just fighting. He's dying to give those people time."
"He is," Adam confirmed, his voice rough. He knew this moment. He had seen it in his future-echoes. "He has accepted his destiny. His sacrifice is... pivotal. It holds the line. It buys us time."
A massive Shadow Demon, larger and more powerful than the others, broke through Oliver's defenses, its clawed hand raised to deliver a killing blow to Lyla, who was desperately trying to keep the portal open.
"Lyla!" Oliver roared, pushing through the pain, ignoring his own wounds. With a final, desperate surge of raw will, he fired an arrow, imbued with every ounce of his dying strength, directly into the demon's head. The creature exploded in a burst of anti-matter dust.
But in that split second of distraction, more Shadow Demons swarmed him, tearing at his limbs. Oliver fell, his body riddled with wounds, his breath shallow. Yet, even as he lay dying, his eyes still burned with defiance. He looked at Lyla, a silent message of reassurance, of love, of mission accomplished.
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Emotion Spike Detected: Sacrifice/Determination (Oliver Queen). His last act of defiance. His final, unyielding will. Proficiency Upgrade: Willpower/Determination (50% - Threshold Reached!). You have internalized the Green Arrow's unbreakable resolve. ]
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE: Proficiency Upgrade: Archery/Tactical Marksmanship (50% - Threshold Reached!). You have internalized the tactical precision of a master archer. Aim for the center mass, or the impossible. ]
A searing surge of pure, unyielding resolve flooded Adam's being. He felt Oliver's raw, indomitable spirit, the sheer force of will that allowed a man with a bow and arrow to stand against cosmic horrors. He also felt the muscle memory, the intuitive understanding of archery, of tactical precision, of hitting the impossible shot. It was a potent, sobering acquisition.
"Now!" Adam barked, his voice filled with a new, commanding urgency. "J'onn, get Lyla and those civilians through the portal! Sara, Ray, Mick, cover their retreat! Barry, you need to go! Now!"
Barry hesitated, wanting to run to Oliver. "But Oliver—"
"He's made his choice, Barry!" Adam interrupted, his voice sharp with authority. "His sacrifice is protecting that portal! Don't let it be in vain! You're needed for what comes next!" Adam, seeing Barry's hesitation, used his Super-Speed (now 55%) to subtly, but firmly, push Barry towards the portal, ensuring he made it through before the anti-matter wave consumed them all. He then used his Vibrational Manipulation (85%) to create a temporary, micro-second shield around the last remaining civilians just as the anti-matter wave struck.
The world dissolved into a blinding flash of red. Earth-1 was gone.
The Legends were back on the Waverider, battered, shocked, survivors in a universe that was rapidly shrinking. The screen showed nothing but the terrifying, endless red of the anti-matter void.
"Oliver..." Sara whispered, her voice broken.
Adam stood by the screen, his face unreadable, his heart heavy. He had known this moment was coming, had relived it in his future-echoes countless times. But knowing it didn't make witnessing it any less brutal. He had witnessed the ultimate act of willpower and sacrifice. He had gained the skills, but at an unbearable cost.
"He saved them," Adam said, his voice quiet. "He held the line. He bought us time. That's what a Paragon does. Now we honor his sacrifice. By winning this war."
The gravity of their mission had just intensified tenfold. The price of their survival was becoming clear.
