They kept on walking, and the mud road slowly curved to the right, leading them toward a darker part of the outskirts where the trees grew closer together and the sky seemed to narrow between their branches. The forest ahead smelled of old bark and wet roots, tiny insects buzzed around the trunks.
Wen Chong looked at the forest and swallowed hard. "If we enter there… it will cover our tracks. No one will know we passed."
Tian Zuo nodded strongly. "Good. Good. Trees are better than people. Trees don't beat you or judge you."
They stepped off the mud path and walked into the forest, pushing past hanging branches that swayed with soft whuush sounds as the wind brushed through them. The ground here was covered with fallen leaves that made dry crik—crik—crik noises under their feet. The air was cooler inside the forest, and the sunlight barely reached the ground, forming shadows beneath the trees.
