The idea of Lyra going to school had always felt far-off, a future milestone Eliza imagined in the haze of bedtime stories and finger painting. But suddenly, it was here.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Eliza muttered, flipping through a brochure while Will held a tablet in one hand and a half-eaten apple in the other.

"She's three," Will said. "Which means we're late by some parental standards and early by others. We're… moderately on time."

Eliza gave him a look. "That's not helping."

He grinned and nudged her knee with his. "We've already narrowed it down to three schools. That's impressive considering one of them wants our utility bill, five references, and a blood oath."

"That was the elite Montessori one," Eliza groaned. "The one with the goat yoga and toddler-led kitchen rotations."

Will glanced over his tablet. "Admit it. You were tempted."

"…I was curious," she said, sheepish. "But goat yoga is where I draw the line."

The dining table had turned into a mini war room: forms, pamphlets, comparison charts, scribbled notes, and a sticky note with the phrase "Remember: It's just preschool" underlined three times in Will's handwriting.

Lyra, oblivious to the future being debated around her, sat in the living room lining up her plushies for a tea party. She offered her stuffed bunny an invisible cup and then slurped dramatically herself.

Will watched her, softening. "She's going to love it, you know."

"She's also going to cry the first day," Eliza said quietly. "And I probably will too."

"That's okay. I'll be the strong one. And you can ugly cry in the car."

She laughed, bumping her shoulder into his. "We'll take turns being strong."

They visited each school over the course of the week—Lyra holding tightly to Will's hand the first time, then loosening her grip the second, and finally letting go to explore a bright classroom filled with books and tiny musical instruments. One of the teachers handed her a tambourine. Lyra, of course, shook it like a rock star.

That night, as they sat on the floor surrounded by miniature backpacks and cartoon-covered lunch boxes, Eliza looked around at the chaos of preparations. She held up a tiny pair of glittery sneakers.

"She's going to outgrow these in five seconds."

"Buy two pairs," Will said. "We can keep one for emotional damage purposes."

Eliza snorted. "And when do we figure out the logistics?"

"Already handled," he said. "I'll take her most mornings since I'll be working from home more often. You'll pick her up three days a week, and I'll do the other two. I added it to our shared calendar."

She blinked. "When did we become that couple?"

Will shrugged. "Somewhere between diaper blowouts and family group chats."

She leaned back on her hands, surveying the bags, boxes, and neatly labeled supplies. "I thought sending her to school would feel like letting go. But it doesn't."

"No?" he asked.

"It feels like… growing. Like we're giving her more world to explore."

Will reached over and tugged her hand into his. "That's exactly what we're doing."

And in the other room, Lyra picked up her bunny and marched down the hallway singing a song she made up on the spot—loud, off-key, and utterly fearless.

They smiled at each other.

She was ready.

They were ready too.
