Bonus Chapter(4/4)

The sun filtered through the trees in soft, dappled streaks as Eliza tightened the strap on Lyra's tiny sunhat and laughed when her daughter promptly tried to yank it off again.

"We're not even five minutes in," she said to Will, who was adjusting the picnic blanket beneath the shade of an old oak. "And she's already fighting me like I'm the enemy."

Will grinned, standing with a bounce in his step as he took Lyra into his arms. "That's because you have rules. I'm the lawless forest spirit who gives her fruit snacks and lets her stick leaves in her mouth."

Lyra squealed in agreement, smacking her palm against his cheek before grabbing a fistful of his collar.

It was their first real outing as a family—just them, the countryside, and the lull of early autumn. The hiking trail they'd chosen was tame, with wide paths and occasional benches, and led to a small clearing near a lake where birds wheeled overhead and dragonflies skimmed the water.

Eliza had worried Lyra might fuss. She didn't.

Instead, she'd stared at the trees like they were painted just for her—wide-eyed and wordless, blinking at the filtered sunlight and the wind brushing through her fine, dark hair.

They laid out lunch, taking turns holding her as she wiggled and rolled on the blanket. Her delighted screech at a passing butterfly nearly made Will drop his sandwich.

"I think she's more outdoorsy than we are," he said, watching her try to crawl toward a patch of grass with comical determination.

Eliza smiled. "I think she's going to be her own kind of wild."

Will leaned back on his elbows, watching Lyra like she held the secrets of the world.

They ate slowly, without rush, exchanging lazy glances, brushing crumbs from each other's shirts. Eliza lay on her side while Lyra nestled against her chest for a midday nap. Will lay beside them both, their legs entangled, one hand resting gently against his daughter's back, the other tracing the curve of Eliza's hip through the fabric of her dress.

For a while, they didn't speak.

And then, quietly:

"Do you ever think… we could do this again?"

Eliza blinked, her heart already fluttering even though he hadn't finished the sentence.

"Do what again?"

"This," Will said, gesturing vaguely—toward Lyra, the blanket, the warm quiet between them. "Not soon. Not now. But… eventually."

She looked at him. Really looked.

He didn't say it like a man casually tossing around ideas. He said it like someone who'd been thinking about it every time he watched his daughter sleep, every time Eliza laughed while feeding Lyra mashed carrots, every time she came home and wrapped herself around them like she didn't want to be anywhere else.

Eliza felt the edges of her resistance soften. She touched Lyra's tiny foot, the one that never seemed to stay in a sock.

"I think…" she said, voice hushed by the weight of love, "I'd like that."

Will smiled.

Not wide. Not smug.

Just that kind of quiet, stunned joy that settles in your chest when life unfolds in a way you never thought you'd deserve.

Later, as they packed up to leave, Will took one last photo—Eliza holding Lyra against her chest, trees swaying behind them, her face lit with that blend of serenity and fierce devotion that he'd never quite found words for.

When they reached the car, Lyra was already asleep again, her hat finally forgotten, one chubby fist clutched around a wrinkled leaf.

And as they drove home, windows cracked, the scent of bark and breeze and the promise of more days like this in the air, Eliza rested her hand on Will's thigh and said, softly:

"When the time is right… let's give her a little wild-hearted sibling."

Will's fingers curled over hers without a word.

But his silence was full of yes.
