Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: No Mana!

Clang! Crash! Boom!

Zera swung his axe with all his might, a whirlwind of muscle and steel. He put every ounce of his considerable strength, every bit of his learned combat technique, into each blow.

But... what is this human? It was so small, so fragile-looking. Why wasn't it dead?

The girl, who should have been paste by now, had produced a greatsword from thin air and was effortlessly blocking all of his attacks.

And as she fought, a strange transformation had occurred. Her skin, where it was visible, seemed to have turned to porcelain, with thin, black cracks marring its surface, like a doll.

Her eyes, once expressive, were now the lifeless lenses of a machine. And above her head, a halo of blue and gold light had appeared.

For a moment, Zera had mistaken her for an apostle of the Goddess.

Even for a battle-hardened demon, the sight was deeply unsettling.

A three-meter-tall behemoth of muscle and rage, being held at bay by a girl who barely came up to his waist.

No one would believe it. But it was happening. Her clothes still hid most of her strange body, leading Zera to assume she was some kind of magically or surgically altered human.

Clang BOOM!

At first, she had barely been able to meet his blows. She had a bizarre, unnatural strength, but she was slow. Then, after only ten seconds of combat, her speed had suddenly skyrocketed.

Clang!

Zera grunted, bracing his axe with both hands to block a heavy diagonal slash. The force of the blow was immense. It sent him sliding backward, his feet digging two deep trenches in the cobblestones.

He looked at his hands, which were numb from the impact. The look in his eyes changed. Contempt had given way to confusion, and now, to a grim seriousness.

This was no ordinary human. This was a warrior.

"I see," Zera said, a newfound respect in his voice. "You are a powerful one."

Zera was a warrior born. He had fought countless humans, some of whom had even posed a threat to his life. But none of them, not a single one, had ever projected the same aura of pure, alien danger as the strange creature before him.

He tightened his grip on his axe, all thoughts of toying with his prey gone from his mind.

"From now on, I will fight you in earne guh?!"

I gave him no time to finish his speech. My analysis of his combat patterns was complete. There was no more value in prolonging this fight.

Velocity Override.

To Zera's eyes, I simply vanished, replaced by a streak of golden light.

'So fast! Where did she go?! Left? Right? Behind?!' With no time to turn, he swung his axe behind his back in a desperate, predictive block.

But he was wrong.

Above!

A century of battle instinct screamed at him. He snapped his axe upwards, trying to intercept the attack he now knew was coming.

He was too late.

Crack!

A streak of gold fell from above. Zera's axe handle, cleanly severed in two, clattered to the ground. I landed softly before him.

The blade of my greatsword was already buried deep in his chest. His hardened muscles had offered no resistance. I twisted the handle.

The blade, still inside him, pivoted, slicing diagonally upwards through his heart and out of his shoulder. In the same fluid motion, I reversed the direction, and the sword swept horizontally, severing his neck.

In less than two seconds, Sandalphon had traced a perfect triangle through his torso.

Zera's head, its face still frozen in a look of surprise, spun through the air. In its final moments, his vision tumbled, the world turning upside down before finally settling on my cold, impassive face.

So... I lost.

The thought was calm, detached. The fact of his own death seemed a minor inconvenience. Then, his consciousness ceased.

Clang.

The two halves of his axe fell to the cobblestones. Even with a demon's incredible regenerative powers, the wounds were instantly fatal. Zera's massive, headless body crumpled to its knees before me, then slowly dissolved into a pile of gray ash.

….

I looked at the broken axe on the ground, the last remnant of the warrior demon. Killing demons is rather convenient, I thought. No cleanup required.

I did not move deeper into the town. There was no need.

I knew they would come to me.

...

A flicker of cold steel. A dagger materialized from the shadows behind me, aimed at the back of my head.

But my elbow strike was faster.

BAM!CRASH!

The blow sent the would-be assassin flying into the wall of a burning building. The impact was enough to bring the already unstable structure collapsing down on top of them.

I watched the building fall, making no move to press the attack. The magic this new arrival had used was... interesting. It would be a waste to eliminate them before I had a chance to see more.

Just as I had anticipated, a thick beam of black energy erupted from the rubble, aimed directly at me.

" Aeterna Defensio "

A golden, semi-transparent shield appeared before me, absorbing the blast completely. As the dark energy washed over the shield, data streams flickered in my eyes.

The beam continued for a full ten seconds before dissipating. I stood there, completely unharmed. The only new damage was to the already shattered street at my feet.

As the dust settled, I got a clear look at my attacker. It was a female demon. Leslie.

"So, Zera is dead," she stated, her voice flat, emotionless. It was a simple observation, not a lament. She glanced at the broken axe on the ground. She recognized it. Its owner was nowhere to be seen. The conclusion was obvious.

This strange human girl had killed him. But how? She had no mana. She was no warrior. Yet she had dispatched Zera in the short time it had taken Leslie and the others to arrive.

She had been the first to get here, and yet, she was already too late.
