I frowned. "Word spreads fast."
She tilted her head. "You know how the city watches him, and you.... Some people never stopped envying your marriage."
I didn't rise to her bait. "What do you really want, Lady Aurora?"
She smiled faintly. "To offer advice, be careful who you trust while he's away. Not everyone here wishes you well."
With that, she left, as quickly as she came, leaving a trail of unease and I hated how her words lingered, like seeds of doubt.
As the sun began to set, Lupus prepared to leave, his horse was already saddled, the road ahead slick with rain. I walked with him to the gate, my heart heavy.
"You don't have to face them alone," I said. "Let me come with you."
He shook his head. "It's too dangerous, if they see us both, they'll see it as desperation."
"Desperation?" I bit my lip. "Lupua, I'm your wife, we've faced worse than this together."
