Cherreads

Chapter 8 - First Clue

Mei was lounging in the student council president's chair, casually tapping her perfectly manicured nails against the desk. Her eyes, cold and calculating, occasionally glanced over at Kai, who was in the corner, completely absorbed with his new toy—Lilith.

"Get it! Come on, get the laser!" Kai shouted through laughter as the red dot danced across the wall.

Lilith, on all fours, followed the light like an obedient cat, desperately trying to impress her owner. Her eyes sparkled—not with joy, but with the sheer desire not to disappoint Kai.

"Come here!" Kai called in a commanding tone.

Lilith turned, and without a word, crawled over to him. As a reward, she received a gentle pat on the head from her master.

"Good little kitty."

"He is here," said Mei.

Every gaze in the room—Mei's, Kai's, 'kitty' Lilith's, and even Doggie's, who sat quietly in the opposite corner like a loyal guard dog—turned toward the door.

A boy walked into the room. He was short for his age, with blond hair and eyes that avoided contact. He looked extremely, painfully shy.

"Welcome!" Mei said with a flawless, composed smile.

The boy sat down quietly in the chair across from her.

"So… You know something about the diary?" she asked, fingers interlaced as she leaned back slightly. The boy nodded.

"Perfect."

She closed her eyes and smiled, waiting for the boy to spill everything he knew about the diary.

Silence.

More silence.

Mei opened her eyes. "I'm listening."

Silence...

"Whenever you're ready."

Silence...

Mei blinked—the first sign of irritation. "Um…?"

Ahem! Kai coughed, almost theatrically.

Silence...

Mei stood up, quietly stepping toward the boy before leaning over him. "Are you going to tell me today, or…?"

"I… I'm not allowed to tell you," he stammered.

"Not allowed?" Kai stepped forward, face turning serious.

The boy just shook his head.

And Kai was already fed up. He grabbed the boy by the collar. "What's your name, kid?"

"Gojo…" he whispered softly.

"Okay… Gojo…" Kai growled through clenched teeth, tightening his grip. "Why can't you tell us?"

"They said… they'd kill me…" he barely managed to piece the sentence together.

Mei leaned on the table with both palms and brought her face close to his. Her eyes glowed with a faint crimson tint as she whispered:

"Well then, we'll do something far, far worse."

A DEMONIC grin spread across both Kai and Mei's faces. As if they were savoring the hell they were about to unleash.

Kai let him go… but only to slam his fist into the boy's stomach with full force. The boy and his chair collapsed onto the floor with a loud crash.

"Wait, wai—" he didn't even get to finish the word, Mei was already standing above him.

She raised her foot and began stomping on his face. Harder and harder with each strike. Her laughter, twisted and sharp, echoed like a melody from the depths of hell. She didn't stop until blood started trickling from his nose, his mouth, and down his cheeks.

Cough! Gojo choked, blood dribbling from his nose into his mouth.

Kai grabbed the glass bottle that had been sitting on the table. With one swift motion, he shattered it into two jagged halves, both edges razor-sharp.

He knelt beside the boy and plunged broken bottle into his thigh.

"AHHHH!" Gojo screamed, his body convulsing from the pain.

Blood spurted from the fresh wound.

Doggie, and Lilith—now renamed Kitty by Kai—sat frozen in their respective corners. They knew the true colors of Mei and Kai. But still… they couldn't help but be terrified by the horror unfolding before them, by the DEMONIC expressions on their faces.

Kai kept driving the glass deeper into his thigh while Mei continued to kick him in the head—both laughing with psychotic delight.

Suddenly, the doors burst open and Yuki stormed into the office.

"What are you doing!?" she shouted, rushing over to the boy.

The siblings stopped immediately at the sight of her.

Kai dropped the broken bottle and stepped back, alongside his sister.

Yuki knelt beside the boy, gently lifting his head and placing it onto her lap. From her pocket, she pulled out a small red vial marked with three black stars.

She uncorked it and carefully poured the contents into Gojo's mouth, not spilling a single drop.

Within seconds, his wounds began to heal before their very eyes, his breathing slowly returning to normal.

Yuki gently stroked his head.

His eyes widened. Suddenly, he jumped up and threw his arms around Yuki. The hug was so abrupt and strong that it knocked Yuki backward.

Gojo started crying. "They're DEMONS!!! DEMONS!!!" he screamed uncontrollably.

"You weren't kidding when you said you were from a good family. I've heard potions marked with three stars are incredibly rare," Mei said calmly.

"That's not the problem here!" Yuki snapped as she slowly sat up, cradling Gojo in her arms.

"What's that?" Kai asked, pointing to a small piece of black paper lying on the floor next to Gojo. It must have fallen out of his pocket.

"Doggie!" Mei called.

Doggie stood frozen. His legs wouldn't move. His eyes avoided both Kai and Mei's—he was too scared to even look at them.

A few seconds passed. When Mei saw that Doggie still hadn't moved, she turned toward him with a DEMONIC smile. "Doggie…" she whispered.

Doggie flinched and scrambled over to Mei, more crawling than walking.

"Pick it up for me," she said in a voice so soft, it was almost eerie.

Doggie approached, picked up the piece of paper with a trembling hand, and handed it to his mistress. His palm was visibly shaking.

"Good boy!"

The siblings examined it carefully. It was a small piece of black paper, with a strange white symbol in the center—a circle, with something that resembled an eye. It looked like it had been torn from something larger.

"You may go," Kai and Mei said in unison, their voices perfectly in sync.

They didn't need to tell him twice. Gojo was already on his feet, bolting out of the room without even bothering to close the door behind him. In his panic, he knocked Yuki over again.

"Oof!"

"What is wrong with you two?" Yuki asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and anger.

The siblings simply glanced at each other.

"What do you mean?" Kai asked, his voice innocent and confused.

"This is just how we are," Mei replied.

Yuki exhaled sharply through her nose and shook her head.

"Whatever... What is that?" she asked, pointing to the black paper in Mei's hand.

"A clue," Mei answered softly, her eyes locked on the symbol.

"A clue to what?" Yuki asked.

"To finding the diary," Kai replied, as if expecting Yuki to understand what he meant.

Yuki gave them a strange look. She wanted to ask more questions, but Mei stopped her with a serious glare.

"Go. We need to work on this," Mei said, nodding toward the piece of paper.

Yuki felt the weight of the situation... and simply chose to leave.

Kai and Mei sat at the table, staring at that little black piece of paper for about an hour… then decided to skip the entire school day and head home together with their "pets."

When they arrived at the White House, they threw themselves onto the bed, and silence took over the room.

.

.

.

"So…" Mei started, but had no idea how to continue.

"So…" Kai replied in the exact same tone.

Silence again.

Kai then raised an eyebrow and asked:

"What do you plan to do with Doggie?"

Doggie looked over at Mei the moment he heard the question. He was curious. He wanted to know what his fate would be.

Mei looked at him without much emotion. "Not sure… I think I'll just use him as a servant for now."

Doggie gulped. "So… this is my prison," he thought to himself, too scared to say it out loud.

Mei turned her gaze toward Kai. "And you? What about Kitty?"

"She's my SS," Kai said casually.

"Shadow Slave?" Mei asked, a bit confused.

"Close, very close," Kai said with a smirk. "But actually, she's my—" (sorry, this part has been censored due to WebNovel rules… though yes, Mei did guess the word 'Slave,' and the second word… let's just say I'm not allowed to say it).

Mei's face puffed up like a kid's—her cheeks filled with air and her eyes sparkled as she looked at him, deeply offended.

"Hmph!" she huffed, turning her head to the side so she wouldn't have to look at him anymore.

"What now???" Kai asked.

"You didn't keep your promise!" Mei said, cheeks still puffed, clearly sulking.

"Huh??? Did you seriously expect me to have sex with you?! You're my sister!" Kai yelled. "And besides, you didn't keep your promise either."

"Because it was stupid," Mei snapped before suddenly leaning into his face and lowering her voice into a deep, mocking tone:

"Don't save me anymore… That's my job..."

The imitation was painfully accurate.

Kai blushed instantly. "T-that's not how it happened!"

"Oh yes, it SO was!" she shot back. Then, she changed her voice again.

"Ohhh I'm Kai and I think Ayanokoji is a much more superior character…"

"Because he is!" Kai immediately raised his voice. "At least he's better than Yuichi!"

"Aaaaah?! How dare you!" Mei puffed her cheeks, clenched her fists at her sides, and stomped in place like she was about to explode from within. Then she sharply turned her head to the side.

.

.

.

"How about this—" Kai suggested, "—you pretend to be Yuichi for the whole day, and I'll be Ayanokoji."

Mei instantly brightened up. "Deal! The challenge starts tomorrow at school!" she shouted with a grin.

The next day at school, Kai and Mei wandered through the halls and the courtyard, closely inspecting walls, chairs, and corners. They were searching for the symbol—the one that matched theirs.

But today… they weren't themselves.

Today, they were different people.

Or at least, pretending to be.

Kai hadn't spoken much all morning, which was super unusual for him, but he had to stay in character. Still, he saw his chance to shine.

Ahead of them sat Kitsuna, alone on a bench, crying.

"Let me cook," Kai said confidently before walking over to Kitsuna. He sat beside her and asked:

"Why are you crying?"

Kitsuna didn't even look at him, but started replying through sobs,

"I… I confessed… I told him how I feel…"

"Blah, blah, blah!" Kai interrupted mockingly. "You can't even form a sentence properly. Of course he rejected you!" he snapped at her.

Kitsuna looked up, confused and shocked. Her sobs grew louder, but she managed to ask:

"How… how did you know?"

"Isn't it obvious?" he said with a cruel smirk. "Girls like you cry over the dumbest things. Look at yourself. Pathetic. HAHAHAHA!"

Kai laughed right in her face, doing his best to crush her self-esteem.

Her crying intensified. Her shoulders began to tremble.

"Don't worry, I'm here," said Kai before pulling her into a hug.

Kitsuna was confused—she had no idea what Kai was doing or how she was supposed to feel about it.

But… she felt something.

A warm connection with Kai.

She slowly returned the hug.

They stayed like that for several minutes.

"I need to go now," he said.

"Y-yeah… I should… pull myself together," she replied quietly, with a hint of disappointment, wiping her tears.

Kai walked back to Mei, who had been watching everything from a distance the entire time.

"Mission accomplished," he said, satisfied.

"Pfff… Amateur," Mei mumbled.

Then she motioned her head to the side.

"Check out those two. Arguing like L and Light."

"I see them…"

"Watch this," she said, and with calm, confident steps, she walked toward the two boys who were mid-argument in the middle of the courtyard.

For a second, she just observed.

Then, she stepped in.

"What's going on here?" she asked, in a flat, emotionless tone.

"He stole my girlfriend!" shouted the first one, his face bright red with rage.

"No I didn't!" the second replied, hands raised defensively. "We were just talking!"

Mei nodded slightly, then turned to the first guy.

"Tell me—how long were you with her?"

"Three months," he muttered.

"And during those three months, how many times did you think she might leave you?"

He froze and looked away.

He didn't reply.

But he didn't need to. The answer was written all over his face.

"You know why you're mad? Because you knew this would happen. You're not mad at him… you're mad because you were right."

Then she turned to the second guy.

"And you. If you really didn't mean to make her like you…

Why did you look at her like that?"

She tilted her head.

The truth was, she hadn't seen anything.

But she had to sound like she did—so she bluffed.

The second guy blushed and looked at the ground.

Mei took a step back and glanced at them both.

"Do you really think you're the victims here…?

The real victim is that girl—

the one you're pulling back and forth to fill the gaps in your own insecurity."

She spun on her heel and headed back toward her brother, raising her voice:

"Yuichi would be proud, just sayin'."

"Six out of ten," her brother mumbled with a grin.

"Oh, come on, that was a solid eight! Minimum!" Mei defended herself, confidently giving herself two extra points.

"Honestly, I won."

"You won my butt!" Mei yelled, fists clenched. "I'm the winner, deal with it!"

"Nuh uh."

"The fuck you mean, nuh uh?"

"Nuh uh!" Kai repeated, stubbornly.

"Nuh uh?! I'm your sister!"

Silence. Their eyes met.

Then—

They burst into laughter.
