Chapter 236 - 236: The Standoff.

A sudden iceberg erupted in their path, halting everyone in their tracks. The atmosphere turned tense as agents gripped their weapons, ready for combat at a moment's notice. Nick Fury, the X-Men, and Tony Stark were caught off guard, their eyes narrowing on the figure seated calmly atop the frozen mass.

It was a man they all recognized, someone they could never mistake.

"Kurogai," Stark was the first to break the silence, his surprise evident. "Why are you here?"

Sitting above them with an indifferent gaze, Kurogai Blackwood regarded the group. He was striking as always, carrying himself with the kind of quiet confidence that unsettled those who knew him.

"Long time no see, Stark," Kurogai said with a faint smile. "Quite the reunion we've got here. Stark, Nick Fury, Professor Xavier—looks like all the old friends showed up."

His tone was casual, almost teasing, though none of them were foolish enough to think he was here simply for greetings.

"Don't tell me those people inside are connected to you," Stark pressed, his sharp mind already piecing possibilities together. "Or worse, that you're the one behind all this?"

Kurogai's smirk deepened.

"What you said isn't far from the truth," he replied.

Nick Fury's one good eye hardened. "According to our intel, those people fighting inside are directly tied to your… experiments. Word is, you had Victor running a research plan, and the subjects became what we're seeing now. Ordinary people with powers. Don't stand there and tell me this has nothing to do with you."

Fury's tone carried the weight of his suspicion. Every time Kurogai moved, chaos followed, and S.H.I.E.L.D. had learned never to underestimate the scope of his plans. What unsettled Fury most wasn't just what Kurogai did, but why. His motives were always veiled, unreadable.

Professor Xavier's calm voice cut through. "I sense no X-genes in them. Yet, they possess abilities that rival mutants. Tell me, Kurogai—have you found a way to give ordinary humans superpowers?"

The implication struck like thunder. Fury's expression darkened further. If Xavier was right, the balance of the world would collapse. A world with countless empowered humans was a world on the brink of chaos.

But Kurogai only chuckled. "Your imagination is impressive, Professor. But their powers are an accident, not something replicable. Don't worry—I haven't cracked the code to mass-produce superhumans."

Fury let out a slow breath of relief. As long as these abilities weren't easily duplicated, the world wasn't at immediate risk of a superpowered arms race. Xavier, however, was less comforted. A small part of him almost wished it were true. If humanity had more gifted individuals, mutants would no longer bear the brunt of society's fear and discrimination. But he knew better. Dreams like Magneto's always ended in disaster.

"Back to the point," Stark cut in, impatient. "You're blocking our way. A fight's breaking out inside, and you know it. Are you seriously planning to let it continue?"

Fury and Xavier shifted their attention back to Kurogai. Whatever the bigger implications, the immediate crisis couldn't wait.

Kurogai tilted his head, his smile sharpening. "Isn't it better to let a few arrogant kids brawl it out? Once they've clashed, things settle down. No need to spoil the fun, don't you think?"

His casual dismissal set Fury's jaw tight. "So you really intend to stop us."

Silence hung heavy in the air as Fury studied him. The last thing he wanted was a direct confrontation with Kurogai. His strength was an unknown variable. Each time he appeared, he revealed new powers, growing ever more enigmatic and dangerous.

Fury remembered when he had first encountered Kurogai. Back then, he had seemed reckless, maybe even manageable. But now? He radiated a presence that was untouchable, almost otherworldly.

Kurogai's growth was relentless. Every disappearance, every reappearance—always stronger, always ahead. S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't have the means to restrain him, and Fury knew it.

"You can try to get past me," Kurogai said finally, his voice calm yet edged with lethal certainty. His gaze swept across them like a blade. "But only if you have the strength. My advice? Don't. Because if you do…"

His smile vanished, leaving only the weight of his words.

"…you'll die."
