The path narrowed into a scar of stone and silence. Every step Kael took echoed faintly, as though the canyon itself listened. The hum in his chest had not faded since the last skirmish. If anything, it beat louder.

Dum-dum. Dum-dum.

Not his heart. Something else.

The Flamewake.

Silna walked a pace ahead, blade drawn. Her amber eyes flicked between the jagged walls, sharp as a hawk's. She hadn't spoken since the retreat of the Wraithborne, but her tension said more than words ever could.

Kael swallowed. The air carried the tang of iron, though no blood stained the earth.

"You feel it?" he murmured.

Silna slowed, glanced back. "The silence? Yes. Too clean. Too staged."

He nodded. The world itself felt paused—birds absent, wind muted. Only the pulse inside him persisted.

Dum-dum. Dum-dum.

The narrow trail bled into a broken hall—ruins carved into the rock, pillars collapsed like fallen soldiers. Strange glyphs, burned and fractured, littered the floor like blackened bones. Kael brushed one with his glove. It disintegrated into ash.

His jaw tightened. "Sigils tied to oaths. Same age as the Wraithborne's fragments."

Silna's lips thinned. "And broken, like everything else here."

The hum within him surged. His breath caught as warmth spilled through his veins, too sudden, too sharp. He staggered, a hand braced against cold basalt.

"Kael?"

"I'm fine." His voice came rougher than intended. "It's the Flamewake. Stronger here."

Silna didn't look convinced. Her hand hovered close to his arm, but she didn't touch him. "If it grows unstable, you say something. Don't play the martyr."

He forced a smirk. "Martyrs don't get far."

The humor fell flat.

Dum-dum. Dum-dum. Dum-dum.

The third beat echoed too loudly. His skin prickled, as though unseen eyes pressed against him. He turned, scanning the shadows. Nothing moved.

And yet—he knew.

Something watched.

> System Alert: [Secondary Presence Detected]

[Designation: Unknown Overseer — Parameters Hidden]

Kael clenched his jaw. It had followed them since the tomb. Always watching. Never striking.

The ruin's far wall yawned into a broken doorway, half-collapsed, sigils crawling with faint ember veins. Silna gestured to it with her blade.

"That's our path."

Before Kael could answer, a whisper cut through the silence.

Not words. Breath. A rasp, circling the chamber like smoke.

He lifted his sword, flame curling faintly at its edge. Silna shifted, back-to-back with him.

From the dark crevices of stone, movement stirred. Not a horde this time—just one. A single Wraithborne.

Its frame bore fragments of bronze armor, insignia half-burned into its chestplate. In its hand, a rusted spear that flickered faintly with black fire. Its sockets burned with ember light, locked on Kael.

It did not lunge.

It waited.

Silna's whisper brushed his ear. "Testing you."

Kael's grip tightened. The hum in his chest rose to a roar.

Dum-dum-dum-dum.

His flame begged to surge, to consume. For a heartbeat, he almost let it.

Then he steadied. Exhaled. The fire dimmed back to a whisper.

The Wraithborne hissed—low, almost approving. Then, like smoke, it receded into the cracks, vanishing as if it had never existed.

Silna cursed softly. "They're toying with us."

Kael lowered his blade, though his pulse did not calm. "No. They're measuring. The Overseer's watching through them. Gauging how much fire I can bear before it breaks me."

Neither spoke after that.

They crossed the ruin and stood before the sealed doorway. The sigils etched across its surface pulsed with a faint, corrupted glow. Once, this had been a Vault of Oaths. Now, it reeked of twisted remnants.

Kael placed his hand against the stone. The hum within him answered instantly, a flare of fire racing his veins.

The door shuddered.

> System Notice: [Resonance Triggered — Flamewake Alignment Detected]

[Warning: Vault Integrity — Compromised State]

The stone split, ember cracks spiderwebbing outward. Air rushed from within—hot, stale, and heavy with whispers.

Silna raised her blade. "Whatever's inside… it's waiting."

Kael's eyes burned faintly blue in the ember light.

"Then let's not keep it waiting."
