"Coleman, it's me."
"Fury?"As soon as he heard Nick Fury's voice, Coleman instantly recognized the caller. After all, there were very few people who could call through this encrypted channel without displaying a number.
"I assume you've also received the news… your big pet's gone missing."
Though Coleman already expected nothing good from a call like this, his face darkened upon hearing Fury's words. Because no one understood better than him how that creature ended up near Las Vegas, Nevada.
Back when they found Godzilla's nest in the Philippines, they had indeed discovered a hatched monster. Later, in search of food, they traveled to Janjira, Japan, triggering the nuclear plant incident.
But during that time, they also discovered that not all the eggs fused to Godzilla's skeleton had fossilized. At least one egg remained biologically active, although faintly.
Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, in charge at the time, chose not to report it—instead, he took the faintly living egg back to their lab. He wanted to study its embryonic genetics: what kind of DNA gave rise to such massive bodies—and maybe even powers?
But once they dissected it, Monarch scientists found something they couldn't explain. The DNA structure and sequencing completely defied modern biology—to the point where they began to doubt their own textbooks.
Even more shocking was that despite all their dissections, the egg's life signal—though weak—persisted. The lifeform inside survived multiple extractions and tests.
Although later analysis suggested it had almost no chance of hatching, as the embryo had largely ceased development, Monarch still refused to discard such a rare specimen.
After internal deliberations, they hid the egg's existence from U.S. authorities and sealed it in a nuclear waste barrel, secretly transporting it to Yucca Mountain's nuclear repository.
This wasn't random. Unlike the Japanese counterpart, this egg was weak. But the Japanese MUTO had revealed that their kind fed on radioactive material.
So Monarch hoped the high radiation levels at Yucca Mountain might somehow revive the dying embryo.
But the Japanese MUTO matured much faster, and Monarch's focus shifted overseas. With time, the Yucca Mountain egg was forgotten.
No one in Monarch ever thought the egg would survive—let alone grow into a monster powerful enough to crush them all.
After getting the news from the Pentagon, Coleman knew they were screwed.Sure, no one noticed the egg when it was first stored—but if the higher-ups start digging, it'll all come out eventually.
"We didn't expect this to happen. If we'd known, we'd have destroyed it long ago."Now that Nick Fury had guessed the truth, Coleman saw no point in denying it.
He knew well that Nick Fury was the world's top spy, and there was no hiding from someone like him—not if they decided to launch a full investigation.
After all, Monarch never really considered the consequences of their actions. As a team of scientists, they were not nearly as methodical or disciplined as S.H.I.E.L.D.
So when Fury accused them of carelessness, Coleman didn't argue.
"You didn't expect this?" Fury scoffed."No—you never even bothered to consider the risk."
Fury understood Monarch all too well. They were brilliant but myopic—always focused on scientific gains, never on fallout.
"I won't waste time. I want your intel on that monster."
"You want intel?!"Even though Coleman accepted some blame for the disaster, hearing Fury ask for classified MUTO data made him instinctively defensive.
Many of Monarch's findings tied into other confidential projects. Coleman didn't want S.H.I.E.L.D. getting access to everything. They might not have monster research experience—but they were unmatched at global surveillance, tactical response, and political maneuvering.
He feared that if he gave them the full picture, S.H.I.E.L.D. would swoop in and take over.
"Of course… but you wouldn't want my people fighting your darling creature blind, would you?"Fury's voice was sharp, almost amused. In just a second, he saw through Coleman's hesitation and knew the data must include something sensitive.
Coleman hesitated—but in the end, his conscience slightly outweighed his pride.
He agreed to send the relevant MUTO files to S.H.I.E.L.D.
But once he hung up, Coleman opened the files… and selectively deleted several key pieces of information.
They weren't "directly" related to the MUTO, but Coleman knew…They were extremely important.
Once the redactions were complete, he sent the modified file to Nick Fury.
