Tony opened his helmet and looked around at everyone present:"Looks like I'm not late."

Then he turned to Nick Fury:"You should know what those things are. But I know they came to Earth decades ago. What I want to know is—who were you back then? And how did you drive them away?"

Tony hadn't originally planned to show up so soon. But while going through Coulson's files back at his company, he detected the hawk-shaped ships in the sky. By chance, the Stark family happened to have data related to the Kree's invasion 25 years ago.

After comparing the data, Tony confirmed that the ships in the sky belonged to the same group that had invaded Earth back then. Logically, if those aliens had come once, S.H.I.E.L.D. must have some record of it.

What Tony really wanted to know was: how did Earth repel them decades ago, when technology wasn't nearly as advanced?

As soon as Tony said that, everyone present—except Clark—turned to look at Nick Fury, including the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Even Hill, the highest-ranking one there, had never seen records of an alien invasion in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database, let alone Agents like Natasha or Coulson, who only held Level 7 clearance.

"You ever wonder why I started the Avengers Initiative?" Fury asked, facing their stares.

"Avengers… Someone drove them off?" Tony was, after all, cursed with intelligence. From Fury's simple reply, he deduced the alien fleet had been forced to retreat.

Tony instinctively turned toward Clark. In his mind, only someone like Clark could have had the power to scare off a fleet like that.

"Don't look at me—I was still nursing back then."

"It wasn't Clark. But that person… she's no longer on Earth. That's why I decided to build a team of powerful individuals—to protect the planet."

Fury noticed everyone following Tony's gaze and looking at Clark. It made things awkward, especially with Natasha and Coulson also staring. Fury thought, I'll explain it—Clark was a baby back then, for crying out loud.

"Tony, perfect timing—we're about to go after Loki. Come with us." Natasha, sensing Fury's discomfort, tried to change the subject.

"If we're all going after Loki, then what about the aliens?" Tony had only come because of the aliens.

"Leave them to me. You go after Loki. That's the real priority."With that, Clark looked up toward the moon, where the alien fleet was already nearing Earth's outer atmosphere.

"They're almost here. I'll go ahead." He strode out of the Helicarrier's command room without another word.

"Let's go too," said Natasha, as she led Captain Rogers and the others out.

Once most of the group had left, Tony looked up… then looked down again.

"Well, until I figure out how to survive in space, guess I'm stuck here bullying kids with you."

"Let me think… wasn't the guy in charge of those ships called Ronan?"After exiting the command center, Clark flew straight toward the hawk-shaped fleet.

He planned to destroy them before they entered Earth's atmosphere, so the aliens wouldn't land, and their wreckage wouldn't fall onto Earth.

"Sir, something's coming. A person! But it's not her," said Korath, glancing at a virtual screen that showed Clark flying toward them.

"She's not here? Then kill him and head for Planet C-53 at full speed! She really is gone…"Upon hearing it wasn't the woman who'd destroyed several of his ships 25 years ago, Ronan finally relaxed.

Though the Chitauri leader had assured him she was no longer on Planet C-53 (Earth), Ronan had still been haunted by her presence.

He had always known the Tesseract—the Kree called it the Energy Core—was on Earth. But because of Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Ronan had never dared attack. Not because he cared about her.But because… he couldn't beat her.

If it weren't for Thanos's request, Ronan wouldn't have returned to Earth at all. Just to be safe, he didn't warp directly into Earth's orbit. He arrived at the moon's edge and crept closer.

His plan was simple: If she was still on Earth, she'd definitely see his fleet. And if she showed up before they reached Earth, he would ignore Thanos's orders and retreat immediately.

But she didn't appear. Someone else did—a man.

Think that made a difference? Ronan didn't hesitate: "Blow him up."

Korath pressed a button.Immediately, five of Ronan's massive ships released a swarm of fighters, nearly a hundred million starships pouring out like angry hornets.

They all swarmed toward Clark, who was flying alone in space.Ronan had learned from the last time—he wouldn't underestimate his enemy again. Even if this flying man was strong, Ronan would overwhelm him with sheer numbers and take him down.

"Oh my god…"Back on the Helicarrier, everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. stared at the screen with wide eyes. They saw the alien swarm and instinctively covered their mouths in horror.

No matter how powerful Clark was… facing this many alien ships, how could he possibly win?

Even Nick Fury felt himself growing tense. He gripped the nearby railing tightly.

"Hill, what's the Security Council saying? Do they have a plan?"

As powerful as S.H.I.E.L.D. was, it was still just an intelligence agency. They didn't have the weapons to deal with an interstellar fleet.

To fight back—or even survive—they had to rely on the World Security Council to deploy international military forces.

"Director… They've refused to authorize a military attack. They also rejected preemptive strikes. Instead, they suggested… negotiating."

Hill hesitated, clearly disgusted.

"They want to explain to the aliens that Earth is a peace-loving planet… and blame Superman's actions on his individual mistake. The World Security Council has decided—no attack, no rescue of Superman."

Hill was fuming after reading the Council's response.

"Damn it! Do they think this is some game of house? Talking peace?! Don't they realize those aliens are here for the Tesseract?!"

Nick Fury was about to explode from rage.

"Regarding the Tesseract, the Council's opinion is to hand it over. Their reasoning? It's been on Earth for decades and we've learned nothing from it.So starting a war with a superior alien civilization over this thing… is something they won't support."

"That's the stupidest decision I've ever heard! Hill—what can we do?"

Fury was not nearly as optimistic as the Council. He didn't believe these aliens had traveled thousands of light-years just to grab a glowing cube and leave quietly.
