Mari looked around her new house with wide, glowing eyes, her gaze dancing over every corner like a child in a candy store.
"This is all mine? all this belong to me Hahaha!" she shouted, laughing with pure joy as she leapt onto the king-sized bed, bouncing on it like an overexcited kid.
"Ahem."
The voice interrupted her joy mid-bounce. Mari froze in place and slowly turned toward the sound, only to see Cecil standing near the doorway, watching her with his usual neutral expression.
Her face flushed with embarrassment. She scrambled off the bed, appearing in front of him almost instantly.
"Y-You! When did you get here?" she asked, flustered, trying to salvage what dignity she had left.
"A few seconds ago. Honestly, I thought you were more mature for your age," Cecil said casually as he turned and began walking toward the hall.
Mari's cheeks turned redder. "No—you didn't see anything!"
"Yeah, sure. I didn't," Cecil replied flatly, clearly amused but not showing it. He sat down on a nearby chair, a document already laid out on the table in front of him.
"Come here and sign this," he said, gesturing toward the papers.
"Ahh, I think I have a spell that makes people forget certain memories," Mari thought, eyeing Cecil suspiciously as she walked toward the chair and sat down in front of him.
She watched as Cecil calmly slid the document toward her, beginning to explain its contents—everything from pay, housing, and health benefits to mission stipends. It was surprisingly generous. More like a contract partnership than standard employment. She even had the option to review and renegotiate it every year, which she found fair.
She was all in… until she got to one part.
Her eyes widened.
Her hand slammed the table.
"What do you mean I have to go to school?!" she shouted, glaring directly into Cecil's eyes with righteous fury.
Cecil didn't even flinch. He just leaned back in his chair, expression flat as usual.
There's nothing I can do about that. You're still a child."
"I'm thirteen!" she barked back, outraged.
"Exactly," Cecil replied dryly, not missing a beat. "You're legally required to be in school. Even if you have superpowers, no one gets to bypass the law. Not even you."
Mari let out a dramatic growl, slumping deeper into her seat with her arms crossed like a sulking cat. "This is so unfair. Come on, boss man, just pull a few strings. Say I'm homeschooled by ancient magic or something. I literally own a cursed book."
"No," Cecil said flatly, already standing up and brushing imaginary dust from his jacket. "I will not."
"You could, though."
"I won't."
"petty please "
"NO means no "
Mari narrowed her eyes like a child trying to guilt-trip a parent. "You're heartless."
"You're a government employee now. You'll live." He said as he got up from his chair an walk towards the door
Mari groaned, sliding down so low in her seat she nearly hit the floor. "This is how villains are born, you know."
Mari muttered under her breath, "I'll just skip school, hehe."
Cecil paused at the door, then glanced over his shoulder. "And if I find out you're skipping school, I'll cut your paycheck."
Mari froze.
Her smug smile vanished instantly as she slowly turned toward him. "You wouldn't…"
Cecil arched a brow. "Try me."
Mari threw her hands up dramatically. "Ughhh, fine! But if I die of boredom, it's on you!"
"You'll live," Cecil said, stepping out and letting the door close behind him
Mari let out a dramatic groan and flopped face-first onto the table like the world had ended.
"First day of school and I already feel like a villain."
She stared at the ceiling for a moment, then reached for the Grim book on her nightstand and poked it. "Hope you're ready, 'cause we're about to learn how to survive high school… and not lose our minds."
The book, said nothing.
Mari sighed. "I need friends," she muttered, snapping her fingers and breaking every hidden camera in the house. She wasn't going to let anyone spy on her daily life.
Before heading toward the bedroom to sleep, Mari let out a tired sigh. Today had been a long day. Tomorrow was shaping up to be the start of hell.
