Chapter 362: Master-Level Potential
"Gengar!" Basalt's eyes narrowed slightly.
Gengar is a Ghost/Poison dual-type Pokémon. It has a round shape, its arms connecting to its body, and it has two legs and a short, pointed tail. Gengar's eyes are red, and it has spiky protrusions on its back. Its mouth is often curved into a sinister, haunting smile that sends a chill down one's spine.
"Dante was hiding a Gengar? This guy is sneaky! He's been hiding his power." Roman's eyes widened. Everyone was raising new Pokémon. But evolving a new Pokémon to its final stage in under a year was incredibly difficult. As genius trainers, they wouldn't rush evolution, either. They would wait until the Pokémon's foundation was solid.
But then, thinking of Basalt's Numel, Roman suddenly felt Gengar wasn't that surprising after all. In terms of sheer potential, Numel was arguably the bigger threat!
Let them fight. Bring out all your trump cards! Roman licked his lips, waiting for the battle to continue.
"Shadow Sneak!"
The battle started quickly. "Hee-hee-hee-hee~" Accompanied by a chilling laugh, Gengar floated into the air, rapidly weaving left and right before unleashing two bolts of black energy that shrouded Numel's vision.
"Flamethrower!" Basalt commanded.
BOOM!
The flame clashed with the Shadow Sneak, resulting in an explosion. Shadow Sneak, a move usually weak, was powerful enough in Gengar's hands to match the force of a Flamethrower. This confirmed Gengar's formidable Special Attack power. Basalt's gaze towards Gengar grew colder. This Gengar was not an easy opponent.
But when the smoke cleared, Gengar was gone.
"Dooom~" Numel's eyes narrowed. It muttered "not good," but simultaneously activated its Smog, hoping to track Gengar. If I blanket the field in smoke, Gengar won't be able to escape my senses.
But in the next second, Gengar's massive face appeared right in front of Numel. Its eyes flashed with a strange light. Terrifying psychic energy flooded Numel's mind, instantly clouding its consciousness. It fell asleep.
Hypnosis!
"Gengar, Nightmare!" Dante immediately commanded, pressing the attack.
"Geng-gar~" Gengar's smile widened. The light in its eyes intensified, enveloping the sleeping Numel.
Dooom... Doom...
Soon, the peacefully sleeping Numel's face twisted in terror. Its limbs twitched, and the magma on its back erupted uncontrollably. But it failed to harm Gengar. Then, Gengar changed tactics again, unleashing another attack. Life energy flowed from Numel into Gengar. This time, Gengar used Dream Eater.
Before long, Numel was left listless, its eyes spinning.
"Looks like we lost this one," Basalt smiled and shook his head, but he wasn't too surprised. Numel, like Excadrill, was devastating in attribute-based combat, but against a powerful psychic/status opponent, it was easily restrained. Strong on the outside, weak on the inside. But there were no perfect Pokémon in the world. Besides, Numel was still young. It had plenty of time to improve.
"Numel is unable to battle! Will Basalt please send out his next Pokémon!" the referee announced quickly.
"Thank you for your hard work, Numel." Basalt recalled Numel and tossed out his next Pokéball.
Even though Numel had lost, it had surprised everyone by taking the first match. Basalt immediately sent out Bronzong. Magic must be fought with magic, and strange must be fought with strange. As a Psychic-type Pokémon, Bronzong wouldn't lose to Gengar in terms of status moves.
Soon, the battle resumed.
Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!
Gengar resorted to its old tactics, using its speed to confuse Bronzong. But Gengar had severely underestimated its opponent. Bronzong's psychic power was far stronger than Gengar's.
"Broonz~" As Bronzong exerted its strength, psychic energy swept out. Gengar, which had been moving rapidly, suddenly felt as if it were stuck in thick mud. Its movement became incredibly difficult. Eventually, Gengar was completely immobilized.
"What powerful psychic energy!"
The evaluators were stunned. Dante's Gengar was strong, and immobilizing it required overwhelming power. A professor specializing in psychic types muttered, "It's Pro-level! And its psychic strength is exceptionally high!"
"How is this possible?" Dante couldn't accept it. His Gengar was restrained? The battle had ended before it even began!
"Bronzong, Zen Headbutt!" Basalt commanded calmly.
Sure enough, once the three main powerhouses were out, battling became boring. He had already surpassed his peers too much.
"Broonz!" Bronzong tilted its body, its head glowing with brilliant psychic energy. It slammed into the immobilized Gengar, sending it flying. Gengar hit the energy barrier, leaving cracks, before falling to the ground, knocked out.
In one second, Gengar was taken out.
"Gengar is unable to battle! The winner is... Basalt!" the referee announced quickly.
Basalt had smoothly advanced to the grade-wide Top 4.
The commotion, however, was just beginning. The evaluators on the platform were ecstatic.
"A super genius reaching the Pro-level in his freshman year! Centralis University hasn't seen one of those in years!"
"I know! The last one was Ren Ping, and he graduated over ten years ago. I was lucky enough to be his teacher."
"Teacher Guan, Ren Ping is your student?" someone asked, sucking in a cold breath.
Master-level trainers were respected everywhere. Even the leaders of small leagues were only at the Master level.
To reach the Pro-level before the age of twenty... that was not just a "genius." That was a super genius! A super genius had a high probability of reaching the Master-level in the future.
"Master-Level Potential?"
Bella Bai watched Basalt, slightly stunned. Her father was a Master, but even she wasn't certain she could reach that rank. It was just too difficult.
But now, her junior, the one she was supposed to mentor, had reached a level where he was considered to have Master-Level Potential.
