Chapter 97: Gravity
In the enclosed training room, Drilbur trained with fiery enthusiasm while Bronzor floated nearby, its eyes closed as it sensed the magnetic field from the gravity machine.
"Bronz..."
After some time, Bronzor let out an excited cry. Simultaneously, the magnetic field within the range of its psychic power began to slowly change. And Drilbur happened to be right in the middle of it.
"Drilburr?" (`°ヘ°)
The running Drilbur had a strange expression on its face. For the last few moments, it had felt itself getting progressively more tired. It also felt its body getting heavier. What's going on? Is the gravity machine malfunctioning?
It stopped and scratched its face with a small claw. It could clearly feel that the gravity was no longer at 1.5x; it was at least 1.7x. Did Basalt secretly set it to increase the intensity as I got used to it?
Drilbur glanced at Basalt, who was leaning against a wall, engrossed in his Pokédex. That guy... he's very suspicious. But then it decided it didn't really matter. It was all for training. A little extra pressure might not be a bad thing. Besides, it should trust its trainer.
"Drilburr!" ヽ( ̄▽ ̄)ノ
Drilbur psyched itself up. Brave Drilbur is not afraid of difficulties! Let's go!
It was completely unaware that the real culprit was the floating Bronzor. With a grunt of determination, it continued its training. A little difficulty like this won't defeat me.
Half an hour later, Drilbur felt like it was at its limit. The gravity had continued to slowly increase, now approaching 1.9x. At this intensity, it could manage small movements, but running at full speed and using moves freely was incredibly difficult. Even with its impressive constitution, this was pushing it.
"Drilburr..." o((⊙﹏⊙))o
Drilbur was starting to feel the burn.
"Drilburr..." (¬_¬)
It stopped what it was doing and shot another glance at Basalt, who was still absorbed in his Pokédex, looking completely unconcerned. Is he... testing my resolve?
Yeah, that has to be it. That sneaky guy!
The more it thought about it, the more it made sense. And while the gravity was high, nearing its absolute limit, Drilbur felt... it could hold on. It gritted its teeth and pushed through, sweat pouring from its body.
As its energy was continuously depleted, the pure energy stored within the Smooth Rock began to slowly release, replenishing its reserves. And because this energy was so pure, as Drilbur's body absorbed it, its physical condition was gradually improving. It could feel itself... getting stronger, faster.
Is this the "limit training" Basalt was talking about? It's pretty interesting! What doesn't defeat me only makes me stronger.
But another half-hour later, the pressure suddenly increased again...
Thud!
Caught off guard, Drilbur stumbled and fell on its butt.
"Be careful when you're training, Drilbur," Basalt said, looking up for a moment before going back to his Pokédex.
"Drilburr!" (〝▼皿▼)
This time, Drilbur was angry. I may be a genius with exceptional talent, but isn't this pushing it a little too far?
Basalt suddenly felt a murderous aura wash over him and shivered. He looked up to see Drilbur glaring at him, and he was confused. What's wrong with it now?
"Is it mad because I saw it fall and didn't help it up? Geez, this guy is getting more and more spoiled." Shaking his head, Basalt got up and walked towards Drilbur.
But the moment he stepped within a three-meter radius of his Pokémon, he felt an immense pressure. Even breathing became difficult.
Thud!
Caught off guard, Basalt's legs gave out, and he also fell on his butt.
"Bronz!"
Startled by Basalt's voice, Bronzor immediately retracted its psychic energy. In an instant, the pressure on both Basalt and Drilbur vanished.
"That was... Gravity, wasn't it?" Basalt gasped, his heart pounding with fear. Except for a few rare freaks of nature, a human's physical constitution was no match for a Pokémon's. If he had been under that pressure for much longer, he felt like he might have actually died.
Drilbur was also confused. Seeing Basalt's reaction, it was clear he wasn't the one playing a prank. So who was it?
"Did the gravity machine malfunction?" Basalt asked, unstrapping the device from Drilbur's back after helping it up. But after fiddling with it for a while, he couldn't find anything wrong.
"What's going on?" he wondered, scratching the back of his head.
"Bronz..." Bronzor let out a soft cry, its "face" filled with excitement. As expected of me. In just a short time, I've already figured out the basics of this magnetic field. Of course, it had only scratched the surface. To truly master it and increase its intensity would require a lot more practice.
"Bronzor, do you know what just happened?" Basalt asked, turning to his other Pokémon.
"Bronz," it nodded. Of course I do. I was the one who did it. Aren't I amazing?
"What? You're saying you did that?" Basalt was stunned. Drilbur, on the other hand, looked like it was ready to murder Bronzor. So it was you, you little sneak! It seethed, its teeth itching with rage.
"No way..." Basalt said, his voice trembling. "Don't tell me... you've already learned Gravity!"
He shakily took out his Pokédex, aimed it at Bronzor, and pressed the button.
Beep!

"It really learned it!" Basalt rubbed his eyes, feeling like he must be seeing things. I thought you were sensing Ground-type energy, but you just casually learned the Psychic-type move Gravity on the side?
Before, Basalt wouldn't have thought much of Gravity. But after learning of its true potential from Forrest, he was practically salivating over it. He knew that a status move of this caliber was not easy to learn. Nosepass could only learn it so early because of its natural affinity for magnetism. And yet...
"Well... you've really outdone yourself, Bronzor," Basalt said, at a loss for words.
Drilbur's rapid learning was because it had a cheat item, the Smooth Rock, which gave it an insane talent for the Rock type. But now Bronzor was doing it too? Did you get a cheat item as well?
In that moment, Basalt didn't feel joy. Instead, the pressure on his shoulders grew heavier. He knew that the more cheats his Pokémon had, the faster they would grow, and the more resources they would consume.
"I'm starting to feel like being 400,000 in debt is just a small dip in my life, not my limit." A drop of sweat trickled down his forehead.
His liver ached.
