Chapter 90 - Chapter 90: Origin

Chen Mo sat in a quiet room, staring at the glass of water on the table.

His thoughts churned. Who would send armed mercenaries after him? He was grateful he had hidden last night—if he hadn't, he might not be here now. He didn't fancy his chances in a head-on fight with two armed professionals.

Even today's escape was pure luck. Had he not disarmed them early, it could've ended very differently. And he still didn't know who they were.

As he sat thinking, the door opened. Two men and a woman in plainclothes entered the room and took their seats across from him.

Pan Long and Gan Xiaorong glanced at Chen Mo. Only today had they realized the chairman of the Marching Ant Company was not only incredibly young—but still a student at Binhai University.

If they hadn't seen the files themselves, they wouldn't have believed it.

"Mr. Chen, this case might be more complicated than it appears," Gan Xiaorong began. "We'll need your full cooperation. Please tell us everything you know."

"Ask away," Chen Mo replied calmly.

"Have you offended anyone recently? Anyone you've done business with who might hold a grudge?" Pan Long asked.

"I can't think of anyone specific. I rarely socialize, and as for business, our COO Zhao Min handles most of it. You're welcome to speak with her at the company." Chen Mo kept his tone neutral.

Pan Long pulled out two photos and placed them on the table. "Do you recognize these two?"

"They're the ones who attacked me today," Chen Mo said evenly.

"We have reason to believe they also infiltrated your community last night," Pan Long said.

"They did. My villa is equipped with a private early-warning system. I was alerted and hid before they broke in. The community security failed to catch them. They claimed it was just a couple of petty thieves, so I didn't pursue it. Is that a problem?" Chen Mo asked, his expression unreadable.

"I just find it curious," Gan Xiaorong interjected. "You're clearly capable, so why such caution if they were just small-time crooks? Do you know who sent them? Are you hiding something relevant to our investigation?"

"I've done some basic Sanda training. That doesn't make me bulletproof. When someone breaks into my home in the middle of the night, my first concern is my girlfriend's safety. Whether they're petty thieves or professional killers doesn't matter—I took precautions. As for their identity, I didn't recognize them. And I don't think I should risk my life just to play hero."

The two officers exchanged a look. Chen Mo's calm demeanor made it hard to read him.

"Please walk us through exactly what happened this morning," Pan Long requested. "The more detail, the better."

Chen Mo nodded and began recounting the incident: the crash, the confrontation, the fight, and the aftermath.

"Based on what we know," Pan Long said after taking notes, "this was likely a targeted attack—either on you personally or your company. For now, to avoid unnecessary panic, we've classified the event as an accident with injuries resulting from a traffic dispute. We won't release any names or details publicly. The investigation is ongoing, and we'd like you to keep things confidential."

"I understand," Chen Mo replied.

"Thank you for your cooperation. If we need to follow up, we'll contact you directly." Pan Long collected the recording device and transcript, then nodded. "You're free to go."

Chen Mo gave a slight nod, stood up, and left the room. Outside, he saw Zhao Min waiting.

"Chairman, ready to go?" she asked, falling in step beside him.

"What about Wang Hai?"

"He's still being processed. I've already sent legal over. Since he was defending you from armed attackers, he'll be fine—just some formalities." Zhao Min's voice was steady, but her eyes were sharp.

Chen Mo nodded. "How's Xiao Yu?"

"She's at the hospital. She woke up and should be fine after a couple days of rest. Li Ruoxuan is with her now."

"Let's go see her. Have someone keep tabs on Wang Hai's case—get him out as soon as possible."

"Understood."

Chen Mo stepped into the car, and Zhao Min joined him a moment later.

"The police say it was a car accident, but I doubt that's the full story," Zhao Min said as they drove off. "Do you know who's behind this?"

"Not yet," Chen Mo said, his voice low. "But I intend to find out."

Fifteen minutes later, they arrived at the hospital. Two plainclothes officers were stationed at the ward door. Chen Mo gave them a glance as he stepped inside.

Xiao Yu was sitting up in bed, chatting quietly with Li Ruoxuan. When she saw Chen Mo, her face lit up with relief.

"I'll let you two talk," Li Ruoxuan said, smiling. "Xiao Yu, call me if you need anything."

Once she left, Chen Mo stepped closer. "You alright?"

"The doctor said it's just a minor concussion. I'll be fine in a couple of days." Xiao Yu gave him a reassuring smile. "I was so scared when I woke up and you weren't there."

Chen Mo noticed the dried tear streaks on her cheeks. "Crying? Who bullied you?"

"I did not!" Xiao Yu said, quickly wiping her face. Then she realized he was teasing her and smacked his arm. "Don't scare me like that again."

"It was just a misunderstanding," Chen Mo said, sitting beside her. "Some idiots tried to pick a fight. Wang Hai handled them. I'm fine."

"Are you hurt?" she asked, checking him over with worried eyes.

"Nope. I told you—Wang Hai's a beast. The other guys got wrecked. We just had to go in for a statement."

"Good…" Xiao Yu relaxed and leaned against him.

"Lie down and rest. I'll grab some food."

Chen Mo stayed with her until she fell asleep. Then, he left the hospital and returned to the company.

As soon as he reached his office, he powered on the computer.

"Ink Girl."

"Mo-ge~ Ink Girl is here!" came the lively AI's reply.

"I need everything you can find on the two attackers. The more detailed, the better."

They had broken into his home. Then they ambushed him on the road. Someone was clearly trying to kill him—and Chen Mo wasn't the type to wait around and see what happened next.

There were facial scans now. If those two had ever existed in any database, Ink Girl would find them. In the online world, she was everywhere.

"Processing... please wait a moment~"

Chen Mo leaned back and waited, fingers tapping the desk.

Thirty seconds later, the screen filled with over a dozen files.

"Mo-ge, I found the info."

Chen Mo's eyes narrowed as he scanned the data. His expression slowly darkened.
