The rest of the journey passed in silence. Ayesha didn't respond to Alaric's apology, but she was certain he could feel the storm inside her. They were bound, after all. Through the bond, aside from mindlinking, Alaric had access to her emotions. Marla had once told her that. She could block him if she wanted, put up a wall to keep him out.
But tonight, Ayesha chose not to. She let him feel it all—her grief, her anger, her disappointment. He had given her no reason, no explanation for why he hadn't spared her brother's life. Why hadn't he just subdued Levi, questioned him, and sought the truth? Instead, he had killed him outright.
Her chest burned at the thought, and just then, she felt Alaric's arms tighten around her from behind.
"I'm not ready to tell you everything yet, Ayesha," Alaric murmured weakly against her ear. "Just… give me time. I promise, when I'm ready, you'll know the whole truth."
For some reason, Alaric sounded almost… afraid. Or was she only imagining it?
