Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Smoke Above Veldenar

The early morning mist clung to the air as Renji walked alongside the royal carriage, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

After a tense night, the group was finally approaching Veldenar Province—the heart of the southern alliance. Towering stone walls came into view, standing tall and proud above rolling hills and farmland. The city beyond looked peaceful under the morning sun.

"It's beautiful,"

Princess Celis said, leaning out the carriage window.

"We're finally here."

Elira, composed as always, nodded.

"Once we deliver the documents to Father, we'll be briefed by the southern generals. Let's hope things haven't worsened."

Renji remained quiet.

The demon's words still echoed in his mind.

"Next time we meet, you won't have a fire to keep you warm." "I was told not to interfere... yet."

Something about that timing… the confidence…

It didn't sit right.

As they passed the city gates, the streets bustled with life—merchants calling out deals, children running along cobbled paths, guards patrolling calmly.

And yet…

Renji's instincts screamed at him.

Too quiet. Too perfect.

Then—

BOOOOOM!!!

A deafening explosion rocked the air. The castle's tallest tower burst apart in a fiery blast, sending smoke and stone into the sky. Flames erupted from the impact, and screaming echoed across the city square.

Guards shouted as panic broke out.

"The castle's under attack!"

"Get the nobles to safety!"

"Protect the walls!"

Renji's eyes widened as he watched fire consume the tower.

Celis screamed from the carriage, and Elira immediately jumped down, sword in hand.

"Father...! The council chamber is in that tower!"

Renji stood frozen for a second.

The wind blew smoke into his face.

He clenched his jaw.

The demon's face flashed through his mind. That cold smirk.

That final warning.

"I just came to see the faces of the people I'll be slaughtering soon."

Renji stepped forward, gripping his sword tightly.

His voice was low… angry.

"…Soo… this is what he meant."
