Chapter 147 - chapter 146

Chapter 146 – smile

Years had passed since the end of the world. And yet, the sun still rose, the trees still swayed in the wind, and laughter had found its way back into the hearts of those who survived.

The city that had once been Alexandria and the Sanctuary was now simply called Haven. Brick by brick, family by family, it had grown into something real—a functioning city with police, teachers, doctors, kids on bicycles, and quiet streets. It wasn't perfect, but it was alive.

Rick Grimes, the man who had once fought every day just to keep a single group alive, now worked as one of Haven's lawmen, walking the streets not with a gun—but with a quiet sense of peace. He still bore the scars of everything he'd lost, but he'd finally gained something he never thought he'd have again: a future.

Michonne taught at the local school—history, philosophy, survival. Her class wasn't about dates and facts—it was about resilience, about what it meant to keep going when the world broke apart.

Daryl Dixon had found himself raising a small group of orphaned kids, living just outside the main city on a piece of land he'd carved out with his own hands. He didn't say much. He never had. But the kids adored him. Every night, they sat around a campfire, and he'd tell them stories about the past—about monsters and men, and the line between the two.

Maggie Greene, strong as ever, now helped lead food distribution and rebuilt farms all around Haven. She'd grown softer over the years—not weaker, just warmer. There were days she still thought of Glenn, days she still missed Hershel, and days she still remembered Axel.

Negan—Mayor Negan, they called him, half-joking, half-serious—never stopped being who he was. He still had that damn smirk, still called everyone names, still cursed like it was his native language. But he cared. He helped rebuild the Sanctuary into a place of life, not fear. He helped Axel when he was just a kid full of fire and pain. And he never forgot that.

And then, there was Axel.

The one who had changed everything. The one who silenced the dead.

After his return to Haven, Axel didn't stay locked up inside a house or thrown into leadership. He didn't want power. He didn't want praise. He just wanted peace. Every morning, he'd wake early, before the sun, and walk through the city. He visited the school, helped Daryl fix fences, sat beside Maggie in the market, or stood next to Negan, watching dogs run through the streets.

He talked less than he used to. But when he spoke, people listened. There was a wisdom in his silence. A weight behind his eyes.

One night, the old group—Rick, Michonne, Maggie, Daryl, Negan, even Carol and Eugene—gathered at Rick's place like they always did. There was beer. There was food. There was laughter.

Axel was there too, sitting quietly at the edge of the firelight, katana resting beside him, silver-white hair glowing like moonlight.

They shared stories—some funny, some painful.

Rick chuckled. "Remember when we all thought Negan was the worst thing that could happen to the world?"

Negan smirked. "Still might be, Rick."

Daryl grunted. "You're not even in the top five anymore."

They all laughed.

Then came a quiet moment. The fire crackled. The air was soft.

"I think," Michonne said gently, "this is what Carl wanted."

Rick's smile faltered. "Yeah... yeah, it is."

No war. No walkers. No hunger. No fear.

Just people. Together.

Axel stood, slowly. He looked at them—his family, in a strange, broken way. None of them were perfect. They never had been. But they had all earned this peace.

"I think I'll head out," he said, voice low.

"You okay?" Rick asked.

Axel nodded. "Yeah. I just want to see the stars from the wall. Haven't done that in a while."

They let him go.

He walked to the edge of the city, where the rebuilt wall stood tall but unguarded. He climbed it, sat on the edge, and looked out at the world.

No more death.

No more screaming.

No more fire.

Just wind. Trees. Stars.

He closed his eyes and let the peace wash over him.

For the first time in his life, Axel was home.

He smiled softly and walked

And didn't stop...
