Chapter 237 - Chapter 237: Obi-Wan and Grievous's Battle

Speaking of Grievous...

Kenobi was having considerable difficulty blocking, parrying, and evading attacks from both electro-staffs and opposing lightsabers as he searched for ways to gain a tactical advantage against his multiple opponents.

"Your rescue plan has failed completely, Jedi," Grievous taunted with mechanical harshness.

"I hear a great deal of talk, General," Kenobi countered while deflecting more attacks from the surrounding MagnaGuards. "But what has it truly gained you? A futile pursuit of power, a mutilated body, and your position as Dooku's personal errand boy."

"I am no one's errand boy. And I'm not involved in this political conflict for Dooku's benefit," Grievous snarled in response. "I command the most powerful droid army the galaxy has ever witnessed."

"An army without loyalty, without courage, only programming," the Jedi Master corrected, recognizing a tactical opportunity.

With a sweeping leg movement, he knocked a MagnaGuard off its feet and sent it tumbling backward. Before it could regain its footing, Obi-Wan bisected it with his lightsaber and seized its electro-staff with his free hand. Without losing momentum, he pivoted and drove the Separatist weapon directly into the final MagnaGuard, short-circuiting its systems and permanently disabling it.

"What abilities do you possess that haven't been programmed into you?" the Jedi Master challenged.

Grievous provided his answer by suddenly splitting his two arms into four mechanical appendages, each grasping additional lightsabers before igniting them simultaneously. "I represent the future, Kenobi. A future without the Jedi Order."

The cyborg general charged forward with all four lightsabers spinning in a deadly pattern. Kenobi quickly blocked several strikes with his lightsaber while raising the electro-staff to intercept an incoming blow. The improvised defense only partially succeeded, as his makeshift weapon was destroyed in the process. Before another lightsaber could find its mark, the Jedi Master leaped over his opponent's head. The moment he landed, he was struck by a powerful kick to his back, sending Kenobi sprawling across the deck.

"The legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi ends here and now."

While the Jedi Master struggled to regain his bearings, Anakin and Hope remained surrounded by commando droids with a Dark Acolyte's lightsaber trained on them.

During this standoff, the tactical droid administered several violent electrical shocks to Koth to prevent any sudden movements from the two Republic infiltrators. Anakin stepped forward instinctively, but Koth received another painful shock in response.

"One more step forward and your friend dies," the tactical droid announced with a mechanical approximation of satisfaction.

Frowning with frustration, Anakin raised his hand to use the Force, but what the Jedi didn't anticipate was Ventress employing her own Force push to hurl the tactical droid directly at him.

In that instant, Hope fired her upgraded bio-electric stingers at the two commando droids closest to their position, then immediately shrank to insect size.

The tactical droid that had been thrown at Anakin was bisected after he recovered and began systematically destroying the remaining battle droids.

Ventress advanced aggressively, her yellow eyes tracking Hope's tiny form as she began swinging her lightsaber in multiple deadly arcs. Hope weaved expertly between each strike, narrowly avoiding the crimson energy blade. A final horizontal swing that Ventress executed caused Hope to lose lift from her wings and tumble toward the deck.

She quickly returned to full size and delivered a devastating uppercut to the Dark Acolyte's chin.

Though she was knocked to the ground, Ventress managed to recover and unleashed a powerful Force blast that sent Hope flying backward through the air.

Fortunately, Hope reflexively shrank again, allowing her to remain airborne as she flew directly toward Ventress, only to be intercepted by a surviving commando droid that had managed to target her position. She evaded the droid's vibroblade strike and found herself confronted by Ventress moments later.

She was now maneuvering around two deadly weapons intended to end her life, darting between them with incredible precision. Since the commando droid was closer, Hope flew directly onto its head and fired both stingers point-blank, blasting two smoking holes through the mechanical humanoid's optical sensors. After a moment of system failure, it toppled over motionless.

Hope then retreated through the air, looking back to see Anakin engaging Ventress's lightsaber with his own blue blade.

"You now have two opponents to worry about, Acolyte," Anakin growled, forcing her lightsaber back and engaging her in several more exchanges.

Hope then darted forward, circling Ventress while delivering repeated stinging attacks.

The Dark Acolyte writhed in agony, gritting her teeth until she saw Anakin pivoting and building momentum for a strike intended to cleave her in half.

Staggering desperately, she raised her lightsaber just in time to meet his assault. Between Anakin's natural strength and his Force-enhanced power, Ventress was hurled backward to the bridge's lower level.

She struck the deck hard and, after a moment of convulsions, lay motionless.

With Ventress and the commando droids neutralized, Anakin and Hope reached Koth's side, with the former using his lightsaber to sever the Zabrak Master's restraints.

Falling into Hope's supporting arms, Eeth groaned in pain but managed to pat Hope's shoulder in gratitude.

"Where is General Grievous?" he asked in a strained voice.

"If everything proceeded according to plan, he should be engaged aboard Obi-Wan's vessel," Anakin explained.

"Has he been captured?" Koth asked hopefully.

"If we can prevent his escape, that remains a possibility," Anakin declared.

"What about Scott?"

"Sam located him," Hope reported. "Now let's extract you from this ship."

Hope and Anakin began departing the bridge with Master Koth supported between them. What they failed to notice was that the supposedly unconscious Dark Acolyte was beginning to stir.

After a moment, yellow eyes snapped open, filled with malevolent intent.

With that phase of the mission complete, the final challenge remained: dealing with Grievous.

Suffice it to say, Obi-Wan was still facing considerable difficulties, as the cyborg general seemed absolutely determined to kill him.

Grievous brought his lightsabers down in a pattern that nearly dismembered Obi-Wan completely. But the Jedi used the Force to enhance his reflexes and move his body away from the potentially fatal strikes. Landing several meters away, Kenobi didn't have sufficient time to recover as he was forced to leap away from the incoming assault. The opposing lightsabers carved through much of the surrounding equipment as Obi-Wan exerted tremendous effort to survive against the notorious Jedi killer. When their weapons clashed together, Obi-Wan was forced to bend backward, channeling most of his strength to prevent Grievous from overwhelming his defense.

"Your friends will die, Kenobi, and you will soon join them."

"You are a fool if you truly believe that outcome," Obi-Wan replied, reengaging his enemy with renewed determination.

As he spun to avoid another powerful thrust, Obi-Wan spotted the deactivated MagnaGuard several meters away. Using the Force, he hurled the dismembered droid directly at Grievous. The impact was unexpected, causing the Separatist general to crash through the pilot's chair and the forward viewport.

As Grievous attempted to regain his footing, he found Kenobi's blue lightsaber positioned near his optical sensors.

"Surrender, General."

"Never!"

Grievous swung his remaining lightsabers, knocking Obi-Wan's weapon aside. Rather than continue their direct confrontation, the cyborg leaped away from the Jedi Master and fled on all four mechanical limbs like some predatory beast.

Obi-Wan immediately gave pursuit, unwilling to allow the Separatist commander to escape, but arrived too late as the blast door ahead of him sealed shut—Grievous had apparently locked him inside the damaged frigate.

He drove his lightsaber through the door's locking mechanism while contacting the rescue teams. "Anakin, Sam—I need you to expedite the extraction of Master Koth and Scott immediately. Grievous is returning to his flagship."
