Next, Snape divided the class into pairs. To prevent Hermione from helping Harry, Snape placed Hermione in a group with Alvin from a distance.
Alvin's roommate, Michael Corner, also a Ravenclaw student, joined Hermione's roommate, Lavender Brown.
Alvin looked at the bushy-haired girl in front of him. Her untamed hairstyle couldn't hide her delicate features, though her slightly prominent front teeth added a touch of cuteness.
Well, she's a charming young lady.
Nodding to Hermione to show his friendliness, Alvin began preparing the ingredients, or rather, the herbs.
Hermione seemed hesitant at first but eventually spoke up.
"Alvin Gaunt, did you attend Garden Elementary?"
Alvin raised his head in surprise and looked at Hermione.
"Yes, I graduated from Garden Elementary. How did you know?"
Hermione let out a sigh of relief, finally confirming her suspicion.
"Sure enough, it's you. When I heard your name at the sorting ceremony, I thought it might be you."
Hermione extended her hand graciously.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Hermione Granger, your elementary school classmate. I was in class 4. I heard about your reputation back then—you hardly attended but always scored full marks."
Alvin suddenly realized that he and Hermione were indeed classmates at the same elementary school. He hadn't recognized her because he was so busy making money at the time and rarely attended school.
If he'd known they were classmates, he might have... Ahem, let's not dwell on that.
Alvin extended his hand and shook hands with Hermione.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Granger. It seems we have quite the connection."
"Just call me Hermione. Also, you always topped me in elementary school, but now that we're at Hogwarts, I won't let that happen again. I aim to surpass you."
The girl looked at Alvin seriously, as if making a solemn vow.
Alvin smiled, unfazed by the girl's determination. It was rather endearing.
"Mr. Gaunt, if I were you, I would focus on adding the powdered serpent's fang to the cauldron rather than chatting with my classmate."
Snape's voice came from the side, causing Hermione to blush.
However, Alvin maintained his composure and calmly added the serpent's fang powder to the cauldron, stirring it.
Seeing Alvin remain unfazed, Snape moved on. Like a bat, he drifted over to Harry, scrutinizing his every move, ready to pounce at any moment.
Thus, an hour later, a group of dejected young wizards exited the Potions Classroom.
Especially Harry, who had been reprimanded by Snape to the point of confusion. His face bore a bewildered expression.
Just moments ago, Snape had deducted 5 points from Gryffindor for Harry's improper technique.
Alvin remained behind, seeing Harry's plight and feeling the need to speak with Snape.
He didn't want to be under constant surveillance by the old bat. Although he wasn't afraid, it was a nuisance.
"Mr. Gaunt, I suggest you leave my classroom now unless you want detention."
Snape had started again, his sarcasm dripping.
Alvin got straight to the point.
"Professor, I think we should talk."
Snape said nothing, staring at the young man before him with eyes as deep as stagnant water.
Alvin continued.
"I apologize, Professor. I didn't mean for the sorting ceremony to turn out the way it did, but you saw how quickly the Sorting Hat made its decision."
"As you mentioned, I'm from the Gaunt family, but I'm a half-blood. As far as I know, Slytherin doesn't welcome students like me."
"Ravenclaw was a better fit for me, both personally and for the well-being of the rest of Slytherin."
Having said that, Alvin awaited Snape's response.
Snape's expression remained unchanged as he stood there, silently observing Alvin.
For a moment, the classroom was silent enough for Alvin to hear Snape's breathing.
After an unknown amount of time, Snape finally spoke.
"Mr. Gaunt, there are things I can overlook, but the behavior of some students is beyond my control, even as their house head."
Alvin exhaled in relief, feeling the matter was now resolved. He hoped to maintain a positive relationship with Snape and learn more about potions.
"Of course, Professor. I care only about your attitude. The rest doesn't matter. I'll take my leave now."
After speaking, Alvin gave a slight bow and left the classroom.
Snape watched Alvin's retreating figure for a long time. With deep eyes, he gazed into the distance.
"If, if I could have been like him at the time, Lily, would things have ended differently?"
Snape muttered to himself, a few crystal tears forming in his eyes.
...
What Snape thought, Alvin didn't know. Now, he was stopped by Fred and George.
"Ah! Good afternoon, Master Gaunt."
Fred and George exaggeratedly gave Alvin a playful salute.
Alvin was speechless, rolling his eyes.
"Cut the nonsense. What's up?"
Fred grinned and threw an arm around Alvin's shoulders, acting very familiar.
"George and I sincerely invite you to join the Hogwarts night party tonight, this Saturday, at midnight, in the corridor to the right of the fourth floor. See you there."
Alvin was curious about what the twins had in store. But with nothing better to do, he agreed to see what they were up to.
Seeing Alvin agree so readily, George and Fred walked away.
After parting with the lively duo, Alvin hurried to the Great Hall and grabbed a quick bite for lunch. He had a History of Magic class in the afternoon, and time was tight.
In History of Magic, Alvin quickly fell asleep. The professor, a ghost named Professor Binns, lectured in a monotonous, unvarying tone that made it impossible to stay awake.
Alvin couldn't resist the pull of sleep, and after barely ten minutes, he succumbed, despite Hermione's disapproving glances.
Meanwhile, in the Headmaster's office on the eighth floor, Snape and Dumbledore sat across from each other, ready to discuss Alvin.
