“He is convinced I will eventually go back to him,” Chloe sighed. Damien’s calmness was a clear sign of that conviction. She drew in a deep breath, staring ahead. “He refuses to accept that it is over.”
Gilles detected a subtle quiver in her voice at the end of her sentence. He had grown skilled at picking up on such cues over their years together. For instance, when she put on a faint smile as though everything was perfectly normal, it meant her mind was in turmoil.
“I wish he would just give up and leave.”
“I was summoned to the royal palace after the funeral,” Gilles said after a moment’s hesitation. He could no longer endure keeping his last meeting with Damien a secret; the burden weighed on him like a stone.
“Shall I share a secret with you? Chloe is not dead.”
