“Why should I have done such a thing?”
Damien’s voice, sharp and cutting, halted Chloe’s response in her throat. A cold shiver coursed down her spine as though all the windows had been thrown open to the biting chill outside.
“Why should I sow seeds of discontent in your adoring gaze?” Damien continued, his lips twisted into a bitter sneer. “Damn it! I should never have left you here alone.”
Chloe could sense his anger acutely. It was painfully evident that his ire stemmed from one thing alone—the situation had spun out of control due to a trivial matter he had negligently overlooked.
“I admit that it was my mistake. I will now ensure that I do not let you out of my sight.”
Upon hearing his reasoning for not departing for Swane, despair clouded Chloe’s eyes.
“You have no right to refuse, Chloe.”
“Please, let me go.”
“Divorce will have no part in my life. The same goes for yours.”
“Then do you propose we endure this hollow marriage until death parts us?”
