Weiss leaned against the wall, releasing a protracted sigh.
“I am merely speculating, but…” he began.
“Go on,” Cormier encouraged him.
“It appears that the Duchess is with child.”
“Ah. That would be cause for celebration, but not under these circumstances.”
Weiss concurred with Cormier’s assessment. Under normal conditions, the news of the Duchess carrying the future heir to House Thisse would have been a reason for great joy. However, the timing was far from opportune. With the passing of the King, Damien was on the brink of accomplishing his goal. This unforeseen development, however, added another matter demanding his attention at a critical juncture.
“His Grace will want to ensure that everything is in order,” Weiss said. “If he were to act hastily and make a mistake, he would not be the only one put in danger.”
“If it is the Duchess’s safety he is concerned about, we could provide more thorough protection for her,” Cormier suggested.
