“It appears the festivities have already begun.”
“Earlier than anticipated, indeed.”
As the fireworks erupted by the riverbank, Haywood’s exclamation caused the murmuring among those gathered in the garden to grow louder. Each crackling explosion drowned out any trace of the Queen’s voice—while inside her, a more blinding burst had just bloomed.
Damien helped Chloe to her feet.
“Indeed, a clever businessman is always quick on the uptake. I am quite pleased,” he murmured into Chloe’s ear, holding her close from behind as they stood on the terrace.
“Your Majesty! Would you like to watch the fireworks from here?” Haywood called from the garden.
“I would very much like that,” Damien answered.
Haywood bowed his head respectfully. “I’ll see to it that you have the best view.”
“That man knows exactly what I am up to,” Damien whispered with a grin, his voice low enough that only Chloe could hear.
