The Fourth Division quarters.
A remote, forgotten dojo.
Unohana Retsu and Su Li stepped inside quietly.
"Apologies," Unohana said with a faint smile. "It's a bit run down here."
Su Li chuckled. "That's fine."
The place was ancientâdust in the rafters, cobwebs in the corners, mottled stains of rust across old fittings. Clearly, no one had used it in years. But that was only natural.
The Fourth Division was a squad of healers, not warriors. Their duty was to tend the wounded, never to rush the front lines. Unlike the Eleventh, the Second, or even the Sixth, the Fourth had no culture of training for battle. KaidĆ could be learned by anyone; combat was irrelevant. Sister Hua's squad alone had no rigid standards for fighting strength.
So of course their dojo lay abandoned, gathering dust.
Su Li followed her deeper, casting sidelong glances at the woman leading him. How ironicâthe division with the weakest reputation for combat was commanded by the most terrifying fighter in Soul Society's history. The First Kenpachi, buried beneath the mask of a healer.
They entered the heart of the dojo.
"Please," Unohana said softly, stepping onto the training ground.
"Yes, Captain Unohana." Su Li's tone matched hers, calm but alert.
Both advanced to the center, one after the other.
Then Su Li spoke, his expression faintly embarrassed. "Captain Unohana, I should mentionâmy ZanpakutĆ is currently unusable. Would you mind if we used wooden swords instead?"
Unohana blinked, then laughed behind her hand. "How curious. You're always wrapped in mysteries, Captain Su Li. But that suits me just fine. I had intended for us to spar with wooden blades anyway. With ZanpakutĆ, it's far too easy to lose control. One mistake, and the damage might be⊠troublesome."
Su Li's lips curved wryly. Lose control of your strength⊠no. You mean lose control of the killing urge. He didn't say it aloud.
"That will do perfectly," he replied instead.
Moments later, they faced one another across the floor, wooden swords in hand.
"Captain Su Li, are you ready?" Unohana's eyes curved like twin crescents.
Su Li felt the weight of the moment. A duel with the First Kenpachiâthough only meant as an exchangeâwas a rarity beyond measure. He nodded firmly. "Ready."
"ThenâŠ" Unohana slowly rolled back her sleeves, her gaze sharpening. "Please, be careful."
A breath of air stirred.
Then she was on him.
Her strike came like a shadow's thorn, the wooden sword thrusting for his chest.
Su Li's eyes lit with admiration. As expected⊠faster than anyone I've ever faced. Even wielding nothing more than a wooden blade, her presence radiated the sharpness of a divine weapon.
His body shifted instinctively. He twisted aside, sword inverted, rising to catch her hand. His blade scraped against hers and angled for her wrist.
Unohana's eyes narrowed; her wrist snapped.
Crack.
Her blade slapped his aside, driving it away.
Her stance flowed downward, knees grazing the floor, wooden sword tracing a deadly semicircle. The thrust transformed into a slash, sweeping with brutal grace for his waist.
Su Li frowned. My waist, huh?
His own blade flipped, striking in a strange arc toward her neck.
Unohana's pupils flashed. His strike was quicker than her slash, his timing impossibleâlast yet first. She bent back, the edge missing her nose by inches.
Her counter came instantly, a low sweep for his calf.
Su Li lifted his knee, her blade skimming beneath his foot, its passage shrieking through the air.
Her momentum spun seamlessly onward. Haori fluttering, she carved a graceful arc, blade circling upwardâslashing again, this time at his chest.
Su Li raised his weapon awkwardlyâ
Crack!
Unohana's eyes widened. He had intercepted her strike with the hilt of his sword. Not blade to blade, but wood against handle.
Such a parry left no room for error. Impossible for most. Yet he'd done it with calm precision.
Even in a friendly bout, she had not held backâher speed and edge were real, far beyond what an ordinary captain could withstand. And still, he blocked her cleanly.
For the first time in decades, a shiver coursed through her soul. Something broke loose insideâthe fighting spirit she had long buried. It surged, fierce and exultant, lighting her gaze. Her lips curled in an eager smile.
How long had it been since she felt this?
The thrill of battle, alive again.
She stepped in closer, body flowing forward as though to collapse against him. Her blade rose slowly, then accelerated with lightning ferocity, aiming to carve through him at point-blank range.
Her presence enveloped him, the faint fragrance of her body sharp against the storm of steel.
But Su Li's composure held. His inverted blade rose with perfect timing to meet hers.
Crack!
Thunder split the air as the wooden swords collided, locking together.
They froze in place, breaths mingling, so close they could feel the heat between them.
Unohana's face glowed with excitement, eyes bright and alive. Su Li remained steady, expression calm, weapon firm.
Then her free hand trembledâ
And in her palm, a short, black blade shimmered into being.
It whistled through the air, flashing for Su Li's waist.
