A trap in the form of another dimension, one that could trap the Wizard of EL. And not only trap him; it would drain his energy, make him weak and useless, and leave him vulnerable for another to take him down.
It was their secret weapon. Something they knew Eden wouldn't see coming. So they strategically placed it to catch him. Setting it up in the most strategic and unsuspecting place known to them all.
And it worked perfectly.
"We'll leave him here for a while. Then, in a bit, we can come back and see how weak he's become. Then we can take him—"
