Chapter 3 - Best Friend Breakups Are Worse Than Dating Ones

So, let's talk about best friends.

Or ex–best friends.

Luca and I had been tight since sixth grade. We shared everything—music, snacks, secret handshakes, weird memes about fish with teeth. I thought we'd be old dudes together one day, yelling at pigeons in the park.

But two months ago, something changed.

It wasn't a big fight. It was worse—it was quiet.

They just… stopped texting back.

No explanation. No "I'm mad."

Just silence, like I didn't exist anymore.

And yeah, I could've reached out more. Maybe I was too busy spiraling about school and trying to not embarrass myself in gym class.

But it hurt. It still hurts.

"Sometimes people leave without slamming the door. But you still hear it close."

I see Luca laughing with new friends now. And I smile.

I smile because I don't know what else to do.

Breakups are brutal, but best friend breakups?

They linger in a whole different part of your heart.
