Chapter 3 - Getting The Job

Images from last night stormed her mind as she looked at him, shocked. She felt her cheeks go warm and was thankful for her dark skin that would not betray her in times like this. Kaitlyn swallowed, closing her eyes briefly, trying her best to act composed. She looked up again mustering on a pleasant and professional smile.

"Please have a seat." Mr. Lennox offered.

Suddenly, the young woman felt more aware of her outfit, regretting her decision not to dress to impress as she sat in front of him feeling intimidated; he had on a perfectly tailored three-piece suit, just like last night. Kaitlyn sat down, clutching her bag on her lap and still wearing her most professional smile.

"You are interested in the assistant position?" He asked, just as he took a seat as well. His tone sounded rhetorical, but Kaitlyn still answered his question.

"Yes." She said simply.

"You are much too qualified to be an assistant." He pointed out as he leaned back on his chair, getting comfortable and having a better view of Kaitlyn.

She noticed his eyes accessing her, but his face still gave nothing away. He looked like any other CEO would look like interviewing an assistant.

"That is the only open position, sir." She said a bit annoyed by his observation. Nobody knew just how overqualified she was, nobody more than her.

"Of course. My apologies." He said, and he took up the documents he had placed on his desk earlier, his eyes looking through them attentively, just like earlier. "Two degrees, a master's and a doctorate. If this weren't fact-checked by my team, I would say it were impossible to get all these at such a

young age." He began not sparing her a glance.

At this point, she was sure he had no intention of making it known that he did remember last night and was keeping it strictly professional. Kaitlyn decided she would too.

"Yes, I am quite ambitious."

"Stupid that no one else has snatched you away. But convenient for me anyway." He said this time sparing her a few glances as he spoke.

Kaitlyn sat quietly, waiting for him to say something else.

He just looked at the documents in his hand, turning the pages now and again and sometimes nodding to himself as if in agreement with something he saw. The silence had stretched on for over 2 minutes now.

"Would you like the job, Ms Davids?" She heard him say. He had the files on his desk again and he was leaning forward, his hands together on his desk serving as a headrest. His eyes searched hers but his face remained completely emotionless.

"Yes." Kaitlyn said trying to hide the fact that she had dazed a little just right when he looked at her like that.

"Wonderful," he said with a short smile then leaned back. "You can meet Ms Sterling, she will tell you what you need to know and you can start Monday. Thank you for your time, Ms Davids. I look forward to working with you." He said simply as if

closing the subject then grabbed his laptop.

'ack of manners.' she thought to herself before letting herself out. Of course, a good-looking man and that wealthy had a flaw.

"Congratulations on getting the job. Although maybe not? Mr Lennox goes through his assistants almost like I go through hairstyles." The blond lady from earlier said. Her words made Kaitlyn feel uneasy. "But don't worry, you can handle it; it's just he is very busy, and if your boss is very busy, then you are very busy. It's hard to keep up," she explained.

Kaitlyn nodded, understanding but wondering just how busy he could be. Though she didn't mind, she liked being busy anyway.

"I'm Taylor." The blond woman said with a genuine smile that reached her gorgeous blue eyes, putting out a hand for Kaitlyn to shake.

"Kaitlyn." She replied, then shook her hand.

"Okay, Kaitlyn, walk with me," she said and started walking, her 3-inch heels not stopping or slowing down her short yet quick strides. Kaitlyn officially felt under-dressed.

They walked into an office, the one right after Mr Lennox's.

"Okay, so your office is here, right next to his. There is also a door that connects the two rooms. Allows you to make your errands more swiftly and just faster." She explained, gesturing to the door by her right.

"But don't use the door when he is in a meeting or with anyone for that matter and always knock, whether on this door or the front one. Also, don't go home before him unless he gives you the go-ahead. You might get home and then have to come back, that would be inconvenient." she warned.

Kaitlyn nodded again, paying close attention to the almost identical yet smaller office that she would have to get accustomed to.

Just like his, it was dull, simple. Straight out of a magazine.

The only difference is her wooden desk and a plant by the window. He had no plants in his office, no sign of dirt or anything that could attract dirt either. No carpets or clothing items, his

chairs were made out of leather, and the floor was marble, almost mirror-like.

"Here, there's everything you need: the phone." Taylor gestured over to her wooden desk. "Computer and a laptop for when you leave the office, you're almost always gonna be on the clock. Though you'll have weekends off, of course, he's generous that way." The bubbly blond joked. Kaitlyn smiled slightly.

"Oh here." Taylor handed her a slightly thick file. "You have to sign this before you start. It's a contract and also a nondisclosure agreement; everyone that works here has to sign that, though, especially you, because you'll be by Mr Lennox's side most times, going on trips and whatnot. He's very private.

Which is reasonable when you're that rich." She said matter of fact.

Kaitlyn took a peep at the file but decided to look at it when Taylor was done catching her up with things.

"There's already a system. On the computer and your laptop is your email. There, you see some other people asking for appointments or reminding you of previous appointments. You check with him, then check on the schedule. There are already things there from when the previous assistant worked here okay? He can also send you things he needs taken care of, so you should check your emails religiously even when you're off the clock. Other departments in the company send things to you, so you can get them to him. Everything is important, just remember that."

Kaitlyn took a deep breath, allowing the information to sink in; she thought she could handle it well enough.

"He said I'm starting Monday. I should take the laptop, right? He could send me emails, not to mention other people, right?"

"Oh yes. See, you're catching on. Also, if he tells you to do something, do it right away even though he doesn't give you a time frame to get it done. He does that sometimes." Taylor pointed out.

The blond woman was leaning on the desk, swinging her left foot absentmindedly as she spoke to Kaitlyn.

"When do I need to get these back to you," Kaitlyn asked referring to the documents in her hand.

"Oh by Monday would be good. Taylor said simply. "Oh oh," Taylor said as if just remembering something. "You know how to drive right?" She asked. "Well, you should because you'll get the car. It's just so you can't give him any excuses for being late." Taylor said not giving room for the other woman to say a word.

"Yes I do," Kaitlyn said thankfully, feeling relieved she didn't skip getting her license.

Kaitlyn got back home with a laptop and the documents she had to go through. Somehow she had shoved the thought that she had tasted the lips of her new boss far back in her mind.

She almost didn't remember. She dropped the things on her counter and opened the fridge, fishing out some leftover pasta

and putting it in the microwave.

She opened up the laptop while she waited for the pasta to heat. She went through some unopened emails and replied a few saying she would get back to them on their appointments on Monday after meeting with Mr Lennox. She was still replying to emails while munching on her warm leftover pasta when she heard a knock on the door.

"Coming!" She called out between chewing before getting up and answering the door. She opened the door to a bored-looking delivery man who held a basket in one hand and their usual clipboard in the other.

"Kaitlyn Davids." The middle-aged man said butchering her first name.

Kaitlyn cringed and smiled politely, pushing down her annoyance. Something she had gotten very used to.

"Yes, that's me." She said politely.

"Sign here." He said gesturing to the clipboard in his left hand with his head. She took it and put down her signature.

"This is for you." He handed her the basket.

Before she could ask any questions, the man was already walking down the hall. She scowled at his back, feeling irritated. A city filled with mannerless men, she thought to herself, referring to Seattle.

She took her package in shaking her head and muttering inaudible complaints under her breath. It was her annoyance. She put down the basket on the counter and then took a look inside.
