Chapter 3 - STARS 3: Enchantment

REIYA'S POV

I just followed Vryx, since he's the only one I know here. "Vryx, can I ask—have we met before?" He stopped and looked at me, as if he could read my mind.

I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen Vryx somewhere before, or maybe I was just imagining things.

"Come on," I said, changing the topic. He resumed walking.

It wasn't long before we arrived at our classroom. I was amazed by how spacious it was, with shelves full of books.

"What do they teach here?" I asked Vryx. He handed me a book in response.

"This is Enchantment class." I nodded, even though I didn't really know what that meant. "We're both first years here," he added. That surprised me—I thought he was an upperclassman, since he already knew his way around so well.

Suddenly, the door swung open. In walked a woman dressed entirely in black, except for her striking red lipstick.

"That's Professor Red," Vryx whispered to me, so I nodded. "She'll be our Enchantment professor for the whole school year." I was starting to get it now, so I smiled at Vryx. Good thing he's here—otherwise I'd be completely lost.

Enchantment – To enchant is to cast a spell over someone, like a witch might do. It also means to attract or catch someone's attention in a less mystical way.

"I know a lot of you are new here." Professor Red began, and everyone straightened up.

"Volans Charta." Suddenly, a sheet of paper floated into the air at her command. We all stared in amazement. Wow! "When it appears in front of you, just say your name. That's how I'll get the list of students enrolled in my class." The magic she used left me speechless.

Vryx and I sat together, so he spoke his name first, then I did the same: "Reiya." As soon as I said it, my name appeared on the paper—even though I hadn't written anything down.

"You look surprised," Vryx said with a grin. I couldn't help but smile back. "It's my first time seeing something like that," I admitted, still smiling. For some reason, he seemed stunned for a second, so I gave him a gentle nudge and snapped him out of it.

"Finis Exponentia." When Professor Red spoke again, the list was suddenly in her hand.

"Ms. Buffay, what do you know about enchantment?" She asked a girl in class, but the girl couldn't answer.

"Very well. Turn your books to page 236." I quickly found the page and scanned the topic:

How to enchant?

"From now on, do advance reading. I don't want to ask questions you can't answer," Professor Red reminded us. She had a point—I looked down at my book.

"Ms. Reiya, read the description about enchantment." I jumped a bit when she called on me, but read aloud as instructed:

"The process of Enchantment amounts to the user adding their own Magic onto living or inanimate objects, thereby increasing their natural attribute—enchanting wood to make it stronger than steel, or enchanting swords or even human beings with immense power."

I was about to continue reading when she cut me off.

"Mr. Lyraciel, read the next part." I glanced over at Vryx.

"If one has enough Magic Power—such as the amount possessed by a Dragon—they can even cast Master Enchants which allow them to enchant heavenly bodies themselves." I looked back at my book and reread those lines. Dragons? Are there really dragons in this world? Or is that just a myth?

"Very well. There is only one person known to have enchanted another person's body," Professor Red continued. My mouth dropped open—only one person had ever managed that?

"Who was it?" I asked before I could stop myself. Everyone turned to look at me.

"You're new here, aren't you?" She walked closer as I nodded.

"Read, THE HISTORY OF STARFALL!" she suddenly shouted, startling me. Then she smiled and returned to her desk.

"Don't ask questions if they're off-topic," Vryx whispered to me. Was it really bad to ask? Was my question out of topic? I just wanted to know who it was.

Class ended soon after. As I walked out, Vryx followed close behind.

"Headed to the library?" Vryx asked. His timing was spot-on—I turned to look at him.

"You don't need to go there. I'll tell you." He stopped walking.

"Not here," he added quietly, glancing around at all the students passing by. He walked ahead and I followed him outside.

We found ourselves in a grassy area surrounded by tall trees.

"The Tree of Magic," Vryx said quietly. "You can make one wish a year—and it comes true." My jaw dropped. No way—that couldn't be real.

"What if you make two wishes?" I asked.

"Then something bad or good will happen… Either you lose something or your wish comes true." I nodded at his answer.

"Well, back to our main topic." He tapped the grass beside him and motioned for me to sit down next to him—which I did.

He smelled nice.

"Fifty years ago, there was a young woman who succeeded in enchanting on her very first try. At first, she was admired by all the professors and always received glowing feedback. But everything changed when she discovered she wasn't her parents' real child. Everything changed—the loving girl turned into someone consumed by jealousy and bitterness." He looked at me as he told the story.

"She kept practicing until she mastered enchantment—and eventually learned how to possess other people's bodies. Basically, they'd swap bodies," he explained.

"You mean exchanged souls?" I asked, and he nodded.

"She used her power for evil. Many tried to master that kind of enchantment after her—but no one else succeeded. That's why the Magic Court banned that form of enchantment." I nodded along as he spoke.

There were still more questions on my mind—but they slipped away before I could ask them. Still, we hadn't answered who that woman was.

"That was my mother's story," he added softly. I nodded in understanding. "Come on—we'll be late for our next subject." He stood up and brushed off his pants; so did I.

"What's our next subject?" I asked, but he just smiled at me.

Now, looking around, I saw my classmates sparring with their chosen partners.

"I thought this would be a normal class," I muttered to Vryx, but he just laughed—and I frowned at him.

"It is… a normal class." Suddenly his expression turned serious. I rolled my eyes.

"Mr. Lyraciel and Ms. Noxshade—you two, step forward." It took me a moment to process what Professor Mycroft said.

He was our Martial Magic professor.

We stood in the center of a circular hall—it felt like we were about to duel in front of everyone.

I raised my hand nervously. "I don't even know what I'm supposed to do." Everyone turned to look at me; whispers spread through the room.

"Reiya, there are three types of magic: Fighting Magic, Caster Magic, or Holder Magic. For me to know—for you to find out," Sir Mycroft said with a half-smile. How could I possibly know which one applied to me? He might as well have been speaking another language!

"Shall we start?" he asked me gently—and all I could do was swallow and nod.
