Chapter 78 - CHAPTER 77

— BUT THAT MAKES NO SENSE! — Gregory Evans exclaimed, astonished, as they returned to the car. — It's ridiculous to think that you communicated with the cleaning lady and not with me!

— Maybe they forced him to do it, so as not to raise suspicions... — was Colmenares's opinion, expressed as he turned the key in the ignition. — I think that way he could prevent anyone from reporting him missing to the police, since he was the one who contacted Casilda. It's a master plan. In fact, I'd say it's downright perfect.

The car was put into motion, heading towards the main street.

— This confirms our theory from yesterday — argued Antonia, addressing the detective.

— What theory are you referring to? — the lawyer asked.

— To a hostage exchange for the DVD... — Gregory Evans replied, in a low voice.

— The thing is, there's no DVD.

Greg smiled knowing his plan had worked.

— It is possible that The Widow's Sons need to know, as much as we do, what kind of information Iacobus left inscribed beneath the Velez chapel.

— They must have already noticed that the DVD in the camera they took was blank — the cryptographer added, — but they wouldn't risk going back down. The police could be waiting for them, and I believe they're very prudent in their actions.

— So... why go back to the estate? — Nicolas insisted.

— You can call me stubborn if you want, but before I leave I need to make sure there's no one in Monroe's house.

— You intend to jump the fence and break into the home of an honorable citizen? — Colmenares was completely surprised, so he added, with a grim expression, — ...If that's the case, don't count on me!

— Don't worry... I plan to check out the surroundings and ring the property's doorbell again. We won't miss anything by trying. —

The lawyer looked at Antonia, waiting for her answer. She shrugged and whispered:

— Since we're here...

Satisfied, Gregory Evans relaxed in the back of the car. He knew it was useless to look for them there, but he had to prove for himself that the gypsy woman wasn't lying to them. It was, as Antonia had said, the denial of someone who can't accept the loss of the person they love, something that, on the other hand, was simply inevitable.
