"Wipe?"
"Yeah, wipe… You know, like when you wipe a window."
A younger version of Vlad raised his brows, head turning to Alucard, who was walking with a large tree slung over his shoulder, making his way to a fire.
"Look," he dropped the tree on the fire, sending sparks of flame flying everywhere, "all I'm saying is that one day you are bound to do something terrible, like to eat a baby, or kill a grandma… you know…"
But again, Vlad's head still tilted, brows knitting together.
Alucard sighed as he fell to the ground near him.
"Wipe," he said the word again. "It will help in maintaining regret. It kind of cleans it… makes it pure. It doesn't work on me anymore, but for you it should, so long as you don't spam its effects."
He turned to the sky, gaze fixed on nothing, and face devoid of expression.
"You've got 11 years, kid. After that… good luck."

[BACK TO THE PRESENT]
[HOURS LATER]
Cold fingertips trailed on his chest, their frost waking him from his slumber.
The hand moved under his shirt, its palm suspending itself right near his beating heart.
"I did it," Vlad hissed under his breath. "I killed them."
Another arm moved and inserted itself within his shirt from behind him, its iced touch tightening like the one above his torso.
Alice moved her head and rested it on his shoulder, lightly nodding at his words.
"Are you mad at me?"
She didn't reply. Her eyes just remained open, one of her fingers playfully encircling his sternum.
Vlad raised his arm and put it around her, pulling her closer than she already was.
His eyes then trailed to the clock above them; it had already struck 7 a.m., a time that was way too late for school.
"I told them," Alice spat.
And Vlad's heart slammed against his ribs in understanding.
"And Edward is going to tell her."
With his head bent, eyes gazing at Alice's hair, he had the only view he could look at.
"Which part?"
"Everything."
"Today?"
And she nodded.
His hands clenched around her shoulder tighter; a shift insignificant enough for her to overlook.
"Did he say it?"
She nodded again, eyes still turning to everything but him.
"What did she think?"
"The vision stopped."
Vlad's jaw tightened at her words, eyes unknowingly tearing up.
Then unexpectedly, a faint but visible smile embraced his lips.
He straightened his body, causing Alice, who was sleeping beside the sofa with him, to share a similar fate.
He observed her face, analysing her eyes, which were now glowing with spring.
And for the first time in his whole life, Vlad realised that she was the most beautiful creature he had ever laid his eyes on.

[ELSEWHERE]
Time paused for Bella, her eyes unhesitatingly following Edward, who was grabbing a bag from his car in preparation to enter school.
But when he turned, his eyes completely halted on hers, and the bag fell, slipping effortlessly from his fingers.
He couldn't read what she was thinking; her mental block still proved superior.
Then Bella started walking toward him, and when she arrived, her shoulder brushed past his, their clothes missing each other by a strand of cotton.
Her feet quickened, walking at an uneven pace, not toward school but to the woods.
So, without overthinking it, Edward followed.
Walking right behind her, his hands clenching into his palms because of the scent of her wildly moving hair, which was being blown by the wind.
And just like that, they were gone from human eyes, completely isolated from any potential witnesses.

"You are impossibly fast… and strong." The birds chirped in sync with her voice. "Your skin is pale, white, and ice cold. Your eyes change color, and sometimes you speak like… like you're from a different time. You never eat or drink anything. You never go out in the sunlight. How… How old are you?"
"17," Edward replied from behind her, his face already an arm's length from her ear.
"How long have you been 17?"
"A while."
Her breath hitched when he said it, the world around her seeming to spin.
"I know what you are." She finally mastered the courage.
"Say it," he hissed, his head moving closer. "Say it out loud."
"…"
"Say it," he pressed through the silence.
"Vampire." The word was smoother than she hoped. "You are a vampire."
