Chapter 16 - DINNER (12)

Every tree trunk, every gnarled root Yves navigated, seemed to push her deeper into an existence she hadn't chosen, a world where the only constant was the steady, powerful embrace of the serpent carrying her, and the terrifying, beautiful unknown stretching endlessly before them.

The forest breathed around them, a living, primeval entity, and Rami, a mere speck within its vastness, could only cling to her companion and brace herself for whatever unfathomable secrets it would reveal next.

Yves flicked his dark, forked tongue at her, a gesture that elicited a bewildered tilt of Rami's head. Slowly, with movements both deliberate and graceful, he lowered her to the damp ground. The cool air, still bearing the faint, unsettling metallic tang of this alien world, caused her to wrinkle her nose. A lingering chill from her earlier sneeze seemed to deepen the prickle of unease on her bare skin.

This overwhelming feeling of being adrift and exposed brought a renewed, sharp pang of longing for her original world—a place where things were calmer and more respectful of personal space. The fragmented memories of her apartment, with the slightly sweet aroma of her windowsill plants and the faint, clean scent emanating from Snow's enclosure, now felt like a distant, cherished dream. Even the thought of the peeling paint on her walls held a strange comfort compared to the unsettling, oversized reality surrounding her.

Yves watched her as she stood there, a peculiar stillness about her. Her gaze, wide and slightly dazed, seemed to absorb the dense forest around her, reflecting a palpable uncertainty. Her faint scent, lacking the rich, potent aroma of other females, was barely a whisper of the albus serpentine musk, a stark contrast to the dominant musky odors of his own kind.

He noted her innocent and uncomprehending expression, so unlike the assertive females he was accustomed to. She was fragile and unfamiliar, a creature bafflingly unprepared for this untamed realm. A flicker of something akin to dawning understanding crossed his sharp features; she truly was different, and her peculiar vulnerability stirred an unfamiliar, almost parental instinct. Yet, the primal call of the wild, the necessity of the hunt, remained strong. He slithered off into the shadows, leaving her to her own devices.

Rami stood there, stunned, the sudden absence of his immense presence leaving a void. The rustling leaves and occasional hoot of an owl were the only sounds filling the silence.

"He left me… like that?" she thought inwardly, snapping out of her daze as fear crept in. Every sound seemed amplified as she scurried to find shelter. Spotting a hollowed-out tree, she crawled under its roots, shivering as night fell over this strange and oversized world. A faint shadow cast itself over the tree roots. She shrank back instinctively, her breath hitching.

The faint shadow over the tree roots deepened, and a deep voice called out—confused yet familiar. A strange sense of relief, warm and unexpected, washed over her. Rami crawled out from under the roots, covered in dirt and grime, her cheeks warming, and a small, embarrassed chuckle escaped her lips. Her senses, heightened by her vulnerability, strained to decipher the secrets held within the dense, silent forest.

"Oh… You're back," she said softly, her voice still a little shaky. Her gaze then drifted behind him to what appeared to be a massive boulder. No, as her eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering through the canopy, she realized it was an egg, half her size. She tilted her head, confused, as this world continued to defy her understanding of scale.

Yves watched her emerge, a flicker of something akin to dawning understanding in his golden snake eyes. The creature was still so pale and fragile, not at all like the robust, musky females of his kind.
