She wanted to say something else.

But nothing came out.

"I'm glad I came," she whispered.

"Lullaby! Where are you? Your mother's looking for you!"
Lullaby jumped.

She scrambled to her feet so fast she nearly tripped on her own boots. "Oh no oh no—!"
Her hands flailed for a moment as the voice repeated, more insistent this time.
"LULLABY!"
"Okay! I'm coming! Don't yell!"
She turned toward Lux one last time.
Still asleep.
Still perfect.
Still the guy she'd had a quiet crush on since he crashed that summit party and accidentally summoned a champagne hydra while pretending to be lost.
She smiled—real and warm.
"Bye, sleepyhead," she whispered.
And then, with a quick flick of her fingers, a black rift opened behind her—gentle, almost sleepy in its flow.
