He leaned forward, elbow resting on the mattress, one hand still wrapped gently around Mee's smaller one. His thumb traced slow, absent circles over her knuckles—over the fresh bandages that covered her burned fingers. His messy brown hair fell into his eyes; he didn't bother pushing it back. He hadn't moved since Sera left.
Amelia stirred.
A small, incoherent murmur slipped from her lips—barely audible. Her long brown hair, now loose and tangled across the pillow, shifted as her head turned slightly. Eyelashes fluttered. Then—slowly—her warm brown eyes opened.
Kee's breath caught.
"Mee…" Relief crashed through him so hard his voice cracked. "Thank god you're fine."
Mee blinked up at him—groggy, unfocused. Then recognition hit. A soft, tired smile tugged at the corner of her cracked lips.
"Kee…"
"You look like shit. Calm down. I am fine." She tried to sit up, then winced sharply. "Ouch… ouch…"
