·Chapter Six

The fire crackled softly in the hearth of the old cabin, casting long shadows across the wooden floor. The smell of burning pine filled the air—a strangely comforting scent considering everything we'd been through. But no amount of warmth could push away the chill that clung to Alex's shoulders.

He sat by the window, arms crossed, eyes locked on the darkness outside. His jaw was tight, like he was bracing for an unseen blow.

"He hasn't said a word since we got back," Clear whispered beside me.

"He's scared," I said quietly. "And he's angry. At himself, at me… maybe even at you."

Clear frowned, glancing over at Alex. "We're all trying to survive. None of us have the luxury of anger."

I shrugged. "People process differently."

She sighed, then stood and walked toward the kitchen. I stayed near the fire, but my thoughts were elsewhere—on the system and the points I'd gained.

> [Total Fate Points: 340]

[System Shop – Available Inventory]

I brought up the menu in my vision. The interface shimmered in faint blue light only I could see. The categories were familiar now: Perks, Items, Skills, and a new tab that had just unlocked—Thread Manipulation.

I tapped it.

> ⚙️ [Thread Spike – 300 FP]

"Disrupts the Death Thread for one individual, causing a temporary 'static' that blocks detection and delays death by 72 hours. One-time use."

⚙️ [Chance Mirror – 450 FP]

"Transfers one person's Death Thread onto another target. Risk of paradox. Use at your own discretion."

⚙️ [Thread Key – 400 FP]

"Unlocks partial control over one Death Thread. Limited alteration of cause and sequence. Highly valuable."

I didn't hesitate. The Thread Spike seemed like the most urgent tool. I tapped 'purchase'.

> [Thread Spike Acquired. Stored in Inventory.]

[FP Remaining: 40]

The item materialized in my system inventory—a glowing, needle-like shard of energy that pulsed faintly with violet light. I didn't know how exactly it would work, but I could feel its power.

And I had a pretty good idea who I'd use it on.

---

A loud clatter broke my thoughts. In the kitchen, Alex had slammed his mug into the sink hard enough to crack the porcelain.

"Alex," Clear said sharply.

"Don't," he snapped, spinning to face her. "Don't pretend this is normal. Don't pretend we're a team. We're not. We're just... names on a list. Waiting to be scratched off."

"We're fighting it!" she shot back. "We're not giving up!"

He laughed bitterly. "You think hiding in this cabin for one extra day means anything? Billy's dead! Our friends, Carter—all gone! And you're here playing house with some guy none of us knew a week ago!"

Clear stepped back like she'd been slapped.

I rose to my feet, voice low and cold. "Back off, Alex."

"No. No, let's talk about it. Who even are you, Kai? You show up with your cryptic warnings and 'I know how this ends' attitude, and we just follow you? And now you're with her?"

"Alex, that's enough!" Clear said, her voice cracking.

But Alex wasn't finished.

"I saw how you looked at her earlier. Like she's your prize for saving people. Like we're just numbers you juggle in your little survival game."

My fists clenched.

Clear stood between us, hands out.

"Stop it. Both of you. We're not enemies."

I took a deep breath, stepped back, and walked toward the front door. "You're right about one thing, Alex. You're not part of my past. But I'm here now, risking my life for people I barely know. I didn't come here for rewards. I came to change fate. And I'm doing it—with or without your trust."

I walked outside into the night air.

Behind me, the silence grew heavy.

---

Later that night, Clear stepped out onto the porch, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

"Cold out here," she said, standing beside me.

"Not as cold as in there," I replied with a weak smirk.

She laughed softly. "He's just scared. We all are."

I nodded. "Fear makes people say things they regret."

Clear leaned against the railing. "What he said about you and me…"

"I don't think of you as a reward," I said immediately.

"I know," she whispered. "But maybe… maybe I want to be important to you. Not just another survivor."

I turned to face her fully. The wind played with her hair, brushing strands across her cheek.

"You already are," I said.

The kiss was slower this time. Deep, drawn-out, and warm. Like we were daring fate to take something beautiful from us.

> [Affection +18 – Clear Rivers: 96%]

[Harem Bond – 1/5 Established]

[Unique Trait Gained: "Emotional Link – Share Minor Instincts and Awareness"]

[Death Delay Bonus Activated: Thread Destabilization Resistance +10% (Both Parties)]

When we finally pulled apart, Clear smiled and tucked her head against my chest.

"I don't know what's going to happen next," she said. "But if we're running from Death... I'd rather do it with you."

---

By morning, Alex had cooled off. He apologized stiffly. Clear accepted without hesitation. I gave him a nod, nothing more. Trust wouldn't come easy between us again—but that was fine. It wasn't about friendship. It was about staying alive.

> [System Alert: New Threads Detected in Vicinity]

[Re-Entry: Valerie Lewton (Fragmented Thread)]

[Re-Entry: Ms. Lampley – Minor Thread Presence Detected]

[Reconstruction in Progress…]

"Valerie Lewton?" I muttered.

The system interface adjusted. A map showed her home glowing faintly red.

She'd died in the original movie already, but the system flagged her thread as fragmented. That meant one thing: time overlap. The death hadn't fully resolved in this altered timeline.

"She's back," I whispered.

Clear blinked. "Who?"

"Valerie. The teacher. She should've died already, but something about our actions changed the flow. Maybe saving Carter or shifting the timeline slightly."

Alex stood up, his eyes wary. "What does that mean?"

"It means we've got another chance," I said. "But this time, the timeline might not follow the same script. Death's rewriting."

Alex grimaced. "Then let's not give it the ending it wants."

---

We arrived at Ms. Lewton's house by noon. She was home—packing, oddly enough. Boxes littered her living room.

Through the window, I saw her flinch as her kettle hissed suddenly. It was starting.

"Clear, wait by the fuse box outside," I ordered. "Alex, stay with the car. Don't enter unless I say so."

I moved toward the door and rang the bell.

Valerie opened it, blinking in surprise.

"You're… Kai, right?"

"Yeah. We met briefly at the school. Can I come in?"

She hesitated. "I'm kind of busy right now…"

"It's important. I think you're in danger."

Her eyes narrowed. "I've already talked to the FBI."

"This isn't about them."

I pushed the door open a little. "Please. Just ten minutes."

Reluctantly, she stepped aside.

Inside, everything was teetering. A cracked mug on the counter. A leaky gas burner. The system interface flared up with red alerts.

> [Fatal Chain Initiated – Risk Accumulating]

[Primary Trigger: Kitchen – Gas Leak, Spark, Shrapnel Hazard]

[Thread Spike Use Recommended]

I opened my inventory and activated the Thread Spike.

The air shimmered for a moment. The red glow around Valerie dimmed to a pale orange. The lethal tension in the room dispersed like a pressure valve had just been released.

Valerie blinked. "Did you feel that?"

"Yeah," I said quietly. "It worked."

---

Outside, Clear peeked in just as I exited.

Alex leaned out of the car. "She okay?"

"For now. She doesn't trust me, but she'll live."

> [Thread Delay: +72 Hours – Valerie Lewton]

[Survivor Bonus: +70 FP Earned]

[Alteration Rank: B]

I leaned against the car, exhaling.

Another day bought. Another piece of the game broken.

Clear smiled at me from the other side.

"We're making progress," she said.

"Yeah," I murmured. "But Death won't just sit back and watch."

---

In the darkness, far from us, a shadow twisted.

The pattern had changed. New names flickered on the thread map—Kimberly, Wendy, Lori.

The timeline was shifting.

And Death… was adapting.

---

To be continued...

A/N: MC's character in the world is a student at Alex's school, who never interacted with others. He died in the plane, before take off. That is one of the reason why death wouldn't harm MC directly. Because Kai, the original owner was already dead.
