She stared at the cup, at my outstretched hand, and for a heartbeat the world seemed to pause.
Then she took it, her fingers grazing mine, and the heat of the tea seeped into my skin, burning away a fraction of the cold that had settled in my bones.
"Fine," she whispered, voice barely audible over the distant clink of dishes. "But you'll have to earn every ounce of my trust… and every drop of my forgiveness."
I watched her lift the cup to her lips, the steam fogging the air between us, and felt a surge of something I hadn't allowed myself to feel in weeks.
It was dangerous, reckless, and maybe, just maybe, it was the only thing that could pull us both out of this darkness.
I swallowed as the heavy door shut behind with just her dwindling in my mind.
I could still taste the bitterness of the tea on my tongue like she just wanted to cuss me.
But then, she claims I needed a little bitterness in my life.
