Avery heard a soft voice behind her, snapping her back to her senses like cold water thrown over her head. Her eyes widened slightly before she instantly pulled herself backward, skidding just a little away from Silas and creating a small gap between them.
Her heart was pounding, loud, unsteady thuds that made her chest ache. What is happening to me? she asked herself desperately, her fingers tightening around her laptop as if holding onto something solid might help.
But there was no answer. None that made sense anyway. And even if there was, she wasn't sure she wanted to hear it. The very idea of why her heartbeat went wild when Silas looked at her terrified her more than anything.
"Did I interrupt something, guys?"
The teasing voice cut through the tension like a knife.
