Erik RomanoErik wondered how life would have been without being born like this.
Because of a series of events in his life, coupled with his birth condition, he ended up alone.
His mother died birthing him, and his father disappeared two years earlier.
Erik didn't actually know the reason, but since his father was a military, maybe he had been sent to a mission where he found death.
He couldn't help longing for a different life—one far removed from his current struggles.
The kid grabbed Erik's shoulders and punched him in the face, making him fall to his knees while holding a bloody nose.
The only thing in Erik's mind at that point was only his tormentor's face. It was the face of his nightmares, the face of a monster in human skin.
"This is what you get for being a pathetic, weak-minded loser with a useless power!"
Logan said with an evil grin on his face. The other nearby snickered. There was no distinction between men and women.
All enjoyed seeing the plant hugger in that state. It made them feel better, because even they weren't that good, and Logan was not an exception.
Though Logan wasn't alone. In his proximity, there were two others, Conal and Orson. They weren't actually taking part in the beating, but that was just that particular day. In others, they could even be worse than Logan.
Erik said nothing. He had long learned that talking to this psycho made things worse. He could only hold his bloodied hands out defensively, trying to stop the guy from hitting the most vital areas.
Erik couldn't fight back, even if he wanted. That was the most depressing fact of it all. Not only because he didn't have the physical strength, but also because he didn't have a brain crystal power suitable to fight.
But if for some miraculous twist of fate he got a new power, here and there, without the neural links to support its strength, and increasing his body's power, he would just end up being beaten by Logan more, perhaps with him using his brain crystal power, and creating wounds he didn't have the money to heal.
Then Logan grabbed Erik's arms and whirled it behind his back. His arm twisted painfully into an awkward angle, and the pain from the previous day's beating surged back like a torrential wave.
"AGH!" Erik yelled. But even try to escape from the vise was impossible. Logan then passed to his neck and started suffocating him.
Erik's face turned red.
"Don't make a sound, you fucker!" Logan said. He knew his fun would be over if Anderson, Aaron, and Mikey found out he was beating the little prick again.
Anderson Worthington, the most popular guy in school, and his friends Aaron Greig and Mikey Dixon, would not have tolerated such a brutal beating.
As Anderson was the second strongest student in the school, Logan would face a severe beating if Anderson found out about his actions.
Anderson, Aaron, and Mikey often stopped bullying when they saw it happening. However, Erik didn't think they were truly kind.
In Erik's experience, everyone in this accursed country acted solely out of self-interest.
Unlike Anderson and his friends, the others ignored the bullying. They walked by without helping Erik, only giving him mocking looks.
There was a reason for all of this. Erik's brain crystal power was useless, and he couldn't even use it that much.
His power allowed him to make plants grow faster, and even not that faster than normal.
The power was wholly unsuited for fighting, in a world in which one's survival depended on their strength, and in a country that valued strength above all else.
It wasn't just that. Such a power would have been seen well by people if it wasn't that Frant, the country where Erik lived in focused on agriculture.
In the north, farms were never ending, and the fields stretched until the barrier reached.
The farmers used specialized machinery and mana modified plants to cultivate crops, both on the surface and in underground artificial caves. Consequently, Erik's power was low-ranked in this agricultural landscape.
In this society where power was paramount, Erik's weakness made him a target. People viewed him as subhuman, treating him with contempt and disdain.
Erik's power was a F-σ1-E brain crystal power. The ranking system was based on three scales.
Erik's world was governed by three scales that determined a person's worth. The Ferebitz scale measured the mana in one's brain crystal, like a magical fuel gauge. The Idor scale counted neural links, the bridges that channeled this power through the body. Finally, the Jorm scale rated how practical the power was. Together, these scales painted a cruel picture of Erik's place in society - at the very bottom.
Ferebitz-Idor-Jorm, as for F-σ1-E.
Erik's power was ranked E on Jorm's scale, meaning it was almost useless. It was also ranked F on the Ferebitz scale, the lowest rank on it. That was because the amount of mana he could use was almost 0.
This severely limited his ability to form neural links—connections between the brain and brain crystal that allowed mana to flow from the crystal throughout the body.
Erik only had one neural link—the one he was born with—placing him at the σ1 rank on the Idor scale, the lowest possible level.
These links meant everything for an individual, since the more one had and the stronger the brain's crystal power and the individual's body were.
Erik endured the beating, trying not to trigger Logan more. He looked at the people nearby filled with hate.
Logan released the young man, when he had enough, and kicked him in the stomach. Erik almost threw up.
Conal and Orson kept laughing while Erik convulsed.
"GAH!"
"GAH!"
"GAH!"
With much effort, Erik stood up and wiped the blood from his face.
"Trash!"
Then Logan and his goons left, and so did all the others.
Erik stumbled down the hall, his abdomen and face throbbing with pain. He went behind the school, where few people walked by.
Drawing glances from the passerby, who quickly recognized him.
They knew who he was—the trashy son of Lucius Romano. How a man of such stature and importance have a so useless son was behind them. One thing was clear, though, that the kid's father disappeared two years earlier.
After a long walk from school, and having taken a train, Erik arrived home.
There was no one there to tell him 'Welcome Home', no one to pick him up from school like the others.
Friends, parents, brothers, sisters, lovers even. He didn't know what they were. He was alone in a world that rejected him.
The house was the same as usual. A small apartment in a rundown building, a small kitchen, a bathroom, and a living room, which he also used as a bedroom.
It wasn't enough to live a comfortable life, but at least he had a roof over his head.
Since he had a brain crystal power that allowed him to make plants grow faster, he worked on a farm. The man who hired him wasn't the most pleasant man around, but at least he gave him a chance.
Officially, Lucius Romano belonged to a special force led by General Becker, the country's leader, a team tasked with finding out what the Sinister Cold was, something to which General Becker was strangely obsessed with.
This virus was the primary cause of brain crystal development and the birth of thaids—heavily mutated animals with powers capable of altering the natural order. Most importantly, these were man-eating monsters.
Not only animals were affected; the vegetation also underwent changes centuries ago. Plants grew larger and taller, with some species even developing deadly characteristics.
The Sinister Cold spread from the Mur continent, continent now lost to the thaids. Humanity barely survived on Mannard continent, and on an Island in which the country of Hin was made, under the blackguards' protection.
Things weren't easy even on Mannard. The thaids there were weaker than on Mur, from where the contagion spread, but they were not less deadly.
The creatures slowly claimed the continent, forcing humans to live behind immense walls in small cities.
Divisions among humans started after some time, and the process ended with the birth of seven nations: Hin, Prare, Reraiaph, Khunelerp, Miciselen, Etrium, and Frant.
Erik didn't know how the situation was in the other nations, but here, in Frant, it was terrible, at least for him.
The government turned militaristic ten years before he was born, and one's social standing depended on power and military rank.
Discrimination permeated society. Though Erik's self-loathing for his weakness and resentment towards his absent father outweighed his anger at the nation.
Erik dropped his belongings on the living room table and headed to the bathroom. Frequent bullying meant he spent a lot of money on first aid supplies.
After tending to his wounds, he made his way to the computer, drawn by his fascination with war news.
A headline caught his attention:
[A STALEMATE.]
A war was going on between Frant and Hin.
[There were no surrenders on either side as of Tuesday morning. General Becker released an interview for us. He claimed he was going to conquer Hin, and make our country prosperous!] The author wrote.
"Typical of these scumbags," Erik said.
Erik watched some footage from one of the battles. It was nothing too gruesome, but the young man couldn't avoid feeling slightly happy for Frant's troops dying on the battlefield.
Erik hatred this country.
A few minutes later, the young man closed the browser and took off his clothes.
He was covered in bruises and cuts.
Erik bandaged himself as best as he could.
In the midst of tending to his wounds, Erik froze as he heard keys jingling in the lock of his front door.
Chapter 2The Unwelcomed Gift (1)Erik turned to look at his door opening. There was only one person who had a copy of the keys.
"You…"
Erik looked at the man staring at him on the other side of the room, like a wraith would have looked at a living being.
The last time Erik saw his father was two years prior. His face was how he remembered it, but a long black beard grew on it.
But aside from the new physical features, there was something else Erik noticed. Lucius looked in a hurry.
His movements betrayed anxiety — his eyes darted across the room, as if he expected someone to be hiding there.
"You?!" Erik couldn't help but repeat himself.
"Son..."
An uncomfortable silence filled the room. Through that silence, Erik's rage boiled.
The young man wondered what his old man was thinking while looking at him, at the state in which their house was.
"I'm sorry I haven't been around much," the man said, looking at Erik. He seemed to notice Erik's wounds.
"You are sorry? YOU ARE SORRY?! FUCK YOU! YOU USELESS SCUM PIECE OF SHIT!"
Erik's breath quickened, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. Refusing to show weakness, he composed himself and glared at his father, anger simmering beneath the surface.
"What do you want?"
"I have little time to explain… I came by to drop something important, Erik. You must hide it somewhere safe and ensure no one touches it."
"What? Are you just here to give me more problems?" Erik said angrily. "Or did you finally bring back the milk you left to buy years ago?"
Meanwhile, his father retrieved a large glass container from his backpack. Inside, a strange liquid housed an odd-looking creature.
It had an arachnid-like body with a long hook-tipped tail and eight repulsive, elongated legs. The creature's mouth, as the young man guessed, resembled a mussel but featured strange, pointed teeth.
"DID YOU JUST FUCKING BRING A DAMN THAID INTO MY HOUSE?!"
"No," Lucius said.
"Then what is it?! I swear, if you do not give me a satisfying answer, I will call the blackguards!"
At those words, Lucius face got worried. The blackguards were basically the world's police.
"This is the cause of the Sinister Cold…" Lucius said.
"Fuck you! You can't even come up with something good!"
Erik turned away and walked toward the kitchen. Shaking, Erik poured himself a glass of water, drank it in one gulp, and then returned to his living room.
With a look of rage, disbelief, and pity on his face—pity for himself, for the cruel abandonment by the man he once loved dearly, but also for his father, who seemed so lost in delusions that he'd resort to preserving a thaid, albeit dead, in strange fluid. Whatever mission the Military had sent him on had clearly driven him mad.
"You're not taking me seriously…"
"How am I supposed to take you seriously? Do you hear yourself? The source of the Sinister Cold? I've heard a lot of bullshit in my life, but this beats them all…"
"Erik, look at me," Lucius said. "This isn't a joke. I can't stay any longer. Hide this somewhere safe—a place no one else can find. I'll return for it later. Until then, you mustn't say a word about my visit to anyone. Understand?"
"Why should I, after all you have done to me? Besides, If you found the reason for the sinister cold, why don't you give it to the Military?"
Lucius sighed. "It's complicated."
"Come on! You can't pretend I will do what you say without giving me a single explanation!"
Lucius shook his head. "Look, I know you're scared, but—"
"Scared?" Erik interrupted him. "No, I'm not scared, Lucius… I'm pissed."
Lucius noticed Erik's use of his first name instead of "dad," a realization that pained him.
However, Erik was in the worst mental state. He came home after a humiliating beating. His father returned home after two years just to spout bullshit and dump problems on him.
"Erik, I know I wronged you a lot. However, I only ask you this one favor. Please take this and hide it where only you can find it."
Erik stared in disbelief. His father, the proud Lucius Romano, was pleading with him. Never had Erik seen his father look so vulnerable, never had he seen pleading.
"I assure you, there's nothing to worry about," Lucius said, his voice urgent. "Unless you tell someone about this."
Erik was dumbfounded. His mind raced thinking about the consequences of the Military discovering this thing in his home. Unsettling images flashed through his mind.
He saw himself being interrogated and tortured by Military officials, trying to extract information about this creature—the alleged cause of the Sinister Cold, if his father's words were to be trusted.
Erik didn't know if he had to believe the man, but everything pointed out that he was telling the truth—his look, tone, eyes.
"Okay… I'll keep it hidden. Can I ask you something else, though?"
"Yes, anything."
"Why are you doing all this?"
Lucius furrowed his brow, contemplating a suitable response. After a long pause, he said, "It's for both of us—and to safeguard what's left of our world."
"Protect our world? From what?"
"From something worse than the Sinister Cold and the Thaids—"
Lucius abruptly stopped mid-sentence, his ears catching a faint sound. He rushed to the window, eyes darting outside.
"I can't stay here any longer," he said. It looked like he spotted something outside.
"Of course... You're leaving again," Erik said, his voice laced with bitterness. A storm of emotions—rage, sadness, and betrayal—churned within him.
Once more, he was being abandoned by his father. He teetered on the edge of unleashing his fury, nearly screaming at Lucius to go to hell and demanding he take his mysterious thaid and leave.
Despite his anger, Erik chose to honor his father's request out of the remnants of affection he still held.
He was going to hide the glass container and its content. Though Erik lacked wealth, influence, or social standing, he possessed integrity and determination, but most importantly, empathy.
"Erik… Believe me when I say that I'm sorry. When everything is over, I will tell you exactly what happened. I'm sure you will be able to understand by then, but I need to go for now. Stay here, and I promise I will return to pick you up."
And with that, Lucius left.
Erik slumped into his desk chair and buried his face in his hands.
"Dad..." Erik said.
Despite his anger, Erik couldn't help but hope Lucius would return and take care of him like he did in the past, like a father should.
One thing was certain, though—by agreeing to his father's request, he had exposed himself to an enormous risk. From what or whom, Erik had no idea.
The young man looked at the glass container on the table; there was a clock close to it, and it displayed 03:00 PM.
"Fuck, I'm late for work!"
The young man changed into more fitting clothes. Despite his weakness, Erik was expected to join the military academy in September.
Erik retrieved his backpack from his room. As he did, he cast a glance at his computer monitor, still displaying the article he'd been reading earlier.
The prospect of joining the Military filled him with dread; he loathed the idea of helping what he saw as a corrupt nation in its struggle against Hin.
Erik picked up his jacket from the chair where he left it and went toward the table to pick up his keys.
But taken as he was by emotions, Erik didn't pay enough attention. The jacket hit the glass container, which crashed with a resounding thud.
The container shattered into countless pieces, and the liquid poured over the floor.
The creature tumbled out of the shattered container, sending a jolt of fear through Erik. He had no idea what this thing was, but if his father's words held any truth, its connection to the Sinister Cold made it unquestionably dangerous.
"Fuck! FUCK! FUUUUCK! Erik Romano, you stupid piece of shit!"
Despite the panic, Erik gave a closer look at the creature. Luckily, it didn't move.
Regret filled Erik.
Did he just mess up what his father had worked on for years? Did he ruin the chance to find out what the sinister cold really was?
Erik turned around and ran to the bathroom, searching for where to put the creature's body.
"Dammit!"
Erik remembered the plastic bags under the kitchen sink. He took them, but by the time he was back, the creature was nowhere to be seen.
"DAMN!"
Erik ran to the kitchen to grab a knife.
"I have to get rid of it now. It's ok, they can still research on its body, right?"
As Erik grabbed the knife, he heard a noise behind him. Turning, he saw the creature suddenly lunge at his face, its mouth wide open and legs extended. Before he could react, it latched onto him, its teeth bared.
Erik fell backward onto the wooden floor, unable to do anything to stop the creature. His eyes widened when he saw the creature on his face.
He tried to scream, but the moment he opened his mouth, he felt the creature force something inside.
Then a stinging pain hit the young man on the chest; the creature stung him with its tail, injecting something inside of him. Slowly, as the young man was losing consciousness and falling to the floor, he started seeing something.

[Welcome to the Biological Supercomputer System.]
Chapter 3The Unwelcomed Gift (2)Erik woke up to the image of his house ceiling. He felt confused, as he couldn't connect the dots of what had happened to him.
He slowly stood up and looked at his body to see if something was out of place. Indeed, it was. There was a pile of ashes on his chest.
It took a moment for Erik to connect the dots, as drowsy as he was, but then he did.
"AAAH!" A scream left his body.
On the brink of a panic attack, he scrambled to brush the ashes off himself. What happened? And where was the creature?
Erik stood up. Even if he took off most of them, he still went to the shower to clean himself.
He gave himself a look in the mirror.
"THESE ARE THE MONSTER'S REMAINS!"
There was no doubt about it.
"But how? What happened?"
After washing, Erik went to the living room. The clock hung over the desk showed 8:00 PM.
Erik blanched.
"SHIT!" He reached for his phone to call his employer, Mister Fox, when something bizarre occurred.
[Device found: Smartphone. Do you want to connect to it?]
"WHAT THE FUCK!?"
He recoiled at the sight of the screen before his eyes, but in his haste, he tripped over the coffee table and tumbled to the floor.
"DAMN IT!"
Erik blinked, and for a split second, the screen vanished from his sight. But when he opened his eyes again, the mysterious window reappeared, hovering before him.
[Device found: Smartphone. Do you want to connect to it?]
Erik couldn't quite believe it. What the hell was this?
He racked his brain but couldn't conjure up any explanation for the bizarre sight before him.
Finally, he decided to do the only logical thing in such a situation: try to understand what was happening.
"Uhm…Yes…?"
[Connection to the device: Erik's smartphone, complete.]
A peculiar feeling spread through Erik's mind. It was just as the strange screen had described—he felt a connection to the device.
He picked up his phone and examined it closely. At first glance, it looked the same as usual, yet he sensed a difference.
It was weird and familiar at the same time.
"Shit! I must call Mr. Fox!"
As soon as that thought crossed his mind, the phone went to his contacts and chose Mister Fox's number.
"I'm controlling the phone with my damn mind!"
The phone kept ringing until, finally, someone from the other side replied to the call.
"Where the fuck are you?!"
Mister Fox's voice resonated directly inside the young man's head. Erik could still hear his surroundings as if he didn't have the old man's voice in his brain, yet at the same time, he could hear the phone call.
"Mister Fox?"
"Erik?! WHERE-THE-FUCK-ARE-YOU?-!"
"Ah! Sorry Mister Fox, but-"
"Sorry? I will give you a reason to be sorry when you bring your ugly ass here, you dumb kid!"
"Please, Mister Fox, it won't happen again. I-"
"Listen up, kid," Mister Fox growled. "Pull a stunt like this again, and you're fired. Got it? Now tell me, what was so damn important that you couldn't even bother to call and say you weren't coming in?"
The young man couldn't say what had happened to him, so he tried to find an excuse for the situation. Luckily, he had one available.
"I got beaten up and lost consciousness, sir..."
The old man fell silent. Despite his stern demeanor, he pitied Erik deeply—perhaps more than anyone else did. Maybe he was the only one.
The truth was that Mister Fox had no intention of firing Erik. He was aware of Erik's struggles to find work and didn't want to exacerbate his hardships.
However, the older man's temperament was far from pleasant; he struggled to control his anger, and when it flared, his mouth would spew forth a torrent of harsh words.
"Well... Next time, try to stay out of trouble."
"I will, sir. Again, I'm sorry."
The man sighed. "Come tomorrow at the usual time. If you don't, consider yourself jobless." "I will come, sir, don't worry."
Mister Fox ended the call abruptly. The line went silent, but Erik could still see the phone's screen in his mind. It was a bizarre feeling—as if the screen existed and didn't exist simultaneously. The experience left him disoriented.
"What the hell is happening?!"
Erik felt conflicted about the strange power he had gained—unsure whether to feel elated or terrified. As he pondered this, his mind drifted back to the creature his father had brought home, and he drew some connections.
Then he turned serious.
The creature resembled too much a thaid. Erik knew that well, since he studied thaids a lot. Like his father, he had always been fascinated by what the Sinister Cold, and the Thaids, were. He knew a lot about them.
As Erik reflected on the events, two things became clear. First, whatever had happened to him had granted him some kind of power, though its exact nature remained a mystery. Second, the precise actions of the creature were still uncertain.
[I, the Biological supercomputer, have integrated with the host Erik Romano's brain. Establishing a connection to the brain crystal.]
"What the…?!"
Erik stumbled again as the message screen materialized before him again. However, what truly startled him wasn't the appearence of the screen. That already happened.
No, what truly startled him was the realization that this thing could read his damn mind!
"I'M FUCKED, BLOODY HELL, I'M REALLY FUCKED! THIS THING IMPLANTED ITSELF INTO MY BRAIN!"
A disgusting but also dreadful thought spread through Erik's mind. If whatever this thing said was true, he couldn't separate from it.
[Yes. The host is correct.]
"For fuck's sake. Stop reading my mind!"
The more the young man thought about it, and the more he grew calm. Whatever happened could not be undone. Then the most logical question came to Erik's mind.
"What the hell are you? You said you are the biological supercomputer, but what does this means?"
[The Biological Supercomputer is a technology created to enhance individuals. It requires a source of energy to work. Hence, I had to connect to the brain crystal. Though, the amount of mana the host brain crystal provides is barely enough to allow some essential functions. The host is advised to strengthen the brain crystal as soon as possible to unlock all the functions.]
"Strengthening the brain crystal?" Erik was surprised, happy.
All his problems were because of his brain crystal, and its useless power. But with this thing…
Erik saw an opportunity to change his life. Although skeptical of miracles due to his history of misfortune, he couldn't help but hope that this turn of events was really genuine.
Erik was having trouble believing it. It would most likely be he really was in a coma, and all of this was just a hallucination.
[The host is advised to give a look at the {Powers} window in the Biological Supercomputer System's status screen.]
The reply came quiet. "Status screen? How am I supposed to see it?"
[To go to the Status screen, you must will it to do so. You can say "Status Screen" to make the process more natural.]
Despite his skepticism, Erik couldn't help but hope that this extraordinary turn of events was genuine—that he had finally caught a break.
"Status Screen," the young man said. Willing to see the screen the supercomputer was referring to.
Erik could not touch the interface, but could see it—a window. He could interact with it with his thoughts.
