The afternoon sunlight tickled Liliette’s cheeks. Lying in bed, she nestled deeper into Vlad’s broad chest. His scent—like a winter forest—and the warmth of his body wrapped around her completely. When he kissed her silky silver hair, she looked up.
His face came into view. It was hard to believe that the man whose gray eyes now held such tranquility had been covered in blood just the night before. Her own tear-streaked, red-rimmed eyes were reflected in his gaze.
“I don’t know when I fell asleep,” she murmured.
“No wonder you’re tired. You should rest a little longer,” he suggested.
Liliette shook her head. She didn’t want to waste another moment with him so close.
“I heard you leaving while I was half-asleep. Did you go somewhere?” she asked.
“Something came to mind that needed attention. It took longer than expected.”
As Liliette tilted her head in curiosity, Vlad sat up, slipping out of her embrace.
