Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Gathering Storm

Eva sat at the edge of the leather sofa, clutching the letter with her father's name smeared across the headline. The news about his possible role in the pharmaceutical scandal hit her like a punch.

"How could he?" she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Lucian stood by the window, arms crossed. "You think your father did this? You really believe it?"

"It's not just him," Eva replied, voice tight. "The more I dig, the more it feels like something bigger. Like… someone is pulling all the strings. And Zadie she's in the middle of it, I'm sure."

Lucian frowned, turning to face her. "Zadie? You really trust that woman?"

Eva's eyes narrowed. "I don't know what to trust anymore. But I can't ignore the signs. And Derek Chad… he's not just some outsider. He's playing a part too."

Before Lucian could answer, the doorbell rang sharply. Eva stood to open it. Standing there, framed by the evening light, was a woman she hadn't seen in years.

"Margaret?" Eva's voice was filled with disbelief.

Margaret Langston, Eva's estranged mother, stepped inside hesitantly. "I know this looks sudden. I've missed a lot of time... but I had my reasons."

Eva's jaw tightened. "Reasons? You left without a word. Left us all to deal with the mess."

Margaret's eyes softened, but her voice was shaky. "I was struggling… I needed space. But I'm here now, and I want to help. Whatever it takes."

Eva didn't reply immediately. Suspicion lingered in her mind. "Do you know more about Dad's troubles than you're telling me?"

Margaret looked away. "There are things I can't say... not yet."

Later, Lucian's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, face darkening. "Derek Mason's pushing hard. Legal suits, backdoor deals… He wants Langston's company dead."

Eva paced. "He won't get away with it. We need a plan."

Lucian nodded slowly. "Maybe... we work together, for now."

Eva raised an eyebrow. "You and I? After everything?"

Lucian gave a small, reluctant smile. "Sometimes, survival means making unlikely allies."

Meanwhile, Vivian Thorne was busy in her glass office, cold and calculating. She summoned Lucian with a crisp message.

At the meeting, she leaned forward, voice sharp. "Lucian, you're losing control. Your decisions are reckless."

Lucian met her glare. "I'm doing what's necessary."

Vivian's smile was thin. "We'll see how long the board allows that."

Outside the boardroom, Marcus Kane caught Lucian's arm. "You need to watch your back. Derek Chad is making moves inside your circle. Not everyone is who they seem."

Lucian's expression hardened. "Thanks for the warning."

Eva, frustrated, called Izzy on the phone. "I need you to dig deeper into those transactions. Find anything linked to Vivian or Mason."

Izzy's voice was confident. "Already on it. You'll like what I'm uncovering."

Their conversation was cut short by a knock on the door. Gavin Pierce stepped in, smiling disarmingly.

"I hear you're looking for help with Langston's mess," he said smoothly. "I have resources. We could save the company."

Eva studied him carefully. "What's your angle, Gavin?"

He shrugged. "No angle. Just an opportunity."

But Eva wasn't convinced.

The next day, the atmosphere thickened when Evelyn Cross arrived at the penthouse, her presence commanding attention.

Lucian greeted her coolly. "Evelyn."

She smiled, all polished grace. "Lucian. I see you've been busy."

Eva watched them with a mixture of jealousy and suspicion.

Later, Detective Samuel Reyes met Eva in a quiet café. "This scandal goes deeper than you think," he said quietly. "And the sabotage at Langston? It's connected. You're stepping into dangerous territory."

Eva leaned in. "What do you want from me?"

"Just the truth. But be careful. Not everyone wants that to come out."

Inside Thorne Capital, Sophia Blake whispered to a colleague. "Lucian's losing his grip. Eva's influence is a threat, but also a tool. I intend to use both."

Journalist Ethan Clarke appeared suddenly in Eva's path at a gala. "Eva, your past work uncovered major secrets. Care to comment on the new turmoil?"

Eva's heart raced. "No comment."

He smiled, eyes sharp. "For now."

The worst threat came from Derek Chad himself. At a private meeting with hostile board members, including Vivian and Mason, he declared, "I will take what's mine. Lucian's guardianship over Ari ends here."

Back at the penthouse, Ari suddenly grew sick. Eva hurried to her side. "Shh, it's okay, baby. Mama's here."

Lucian entered quietly, watching Eva tend to Ari. His voice was soft. "Thank you."

Eva looked up, surprised. "For what?"

"For being here. For her."

Their eyes locked, and for a brief moment, the walls between them fell.

The next day, Lucian surprised Eva in the boardroom. "This is my wife, Eva. The future of Thorne Capital."

Gasps echoed. Eva's heart pounded.

Afterwards, she whispered, "Why now?"

Lucian's gaze was steady. "Because you're more than a placeholder."

That night, Eva's phone buzzed with a chilling message. She opened the envelope, trembling. Pictures of her and Ari. A red dot on Ari's forehead. The words: You're not the only one watching. Stay in your lane, Mrs. Thorne.

She ran to Lucian, voice shaking. "They're threatening Ari."

Lucian's jaw clenched. "We protect our family. No matter what."

The storm had truly arrived.

They both knew then that this marriage fake or not carried real stakes, real enemies, and real danger.

The gathering storm had arrived.
