Chapter 4 - Wes- What Happened to Ms. Spectra?

To be read after "My Brother's Keeper 5"

Spirit Week was… strange, to say the least. Everyone had to have a counseling session with Ms. Spectra, but no one seemed happier afterward. Wes already suspected the counselor before his mandatory session. The icy cold room didn't help his suspicions.

"Your file says that you're an average student," Ms. Spectra said. She lounged on her desk, as casual as a student, while Wes shivered in the chair in the middle of the room.

"What's with the cold temperature in here?" Wes asked.

"Cold temperatures keep the mind icy sharp," Ms. Spectra said. "But back to you. Aren't you worried that your parents like your brothers better than you?"

"What?" Wes demanded. What did she know about her family?

"Well, Easton is much more accomplished in basketball, and Kyle doesn't spout crazy theories."

"Hey, my theories aren't crazy!" Wes said. Despite the cold, his blood boiled.

Ms. Spectra walked over to him. He flinched as she touched his shoulder, but sagged under sudden sadness.

"It's okay to have theories!" Ms. Spectra said. "It's great that you stick to your convictions." She pushed Wes out of the chair and toward the door, opening it for him. "Remember, average is better than nothin'!"

Wes shuffled out of the room and to his next class.

It wasn't until he got home later that day that he realized something supernatural had happened to him. He went from being angry to wanting nothing. He had never experienced depression before, but that seemed pretty close. Ms. Spectra must have done something to him. Was she a monster like the meat monster that appeared last week? What kind of monster?

Everyone was still depressed at the Spirit Week Rally on Wednesday, until Jazz Fenton (another Fenton?) vanished in a blast. Wes worried she had vaporized, but the crowd of students cheered for her to return. It must have been a magic trick, because she appeared a few minutes later on the other side of the gym. The spell of misery was broken.

After that, Ms. Spectra never came back to the school. Her disappearance must be connected to the emotions of the student body! Why did no one see the truth?
