"I grew up here, feels strange that I called it home until I joined the Kyzon military…oh well, no time to reminisce about the past here." The soldier marching beside Kilo tried to make conversation but quickly gauged that Kilo wasn't there for a chat.
It felt too quiet for a war zone, maybe it was the training and stories from veterans that made it feel so different. With every street and skyscraper passed his anxiety grew. The city was filled with ambush locations. The once distant blasts now seemed mere city blocks over, every second was bone chilling but all they could was continue with the convoy.
They made it halfway through the city to the base before an ambush struck halting them. The first few vehicles were immediately turned into burning wrecks killing everyone inside and the few soldiers near. The street filled up with flashes of plasma in an instant as the convoy tried to eliminate the threat. The skyscrapers around had them cornered, they could do anything but try and avoid the incoming fire.
Kilo was lucky to avoid the initial hit on the APC beside him but was still hit by shrapnel. The fragmented metal left a deep gash in his right arm, the pain crippled all functioning in his arm yet he still managed to move it on instinct to catch someone. It was the soldier who tried to make conversation, her pale lifeless face immediately told Kilo she was gone. The immediate weight placed upon him of catching the corpse forced him to the ground, he couldn't tell if the blood pooling was from his arm or her shrapnel filled body. He was frozen in shock but reality blasted its way back almost immediately as someone grabbed his arm pulling him away from the corpse into an alley to avoid fire.
