Cherreads

Chapter 6 - Chapter 4: First Glimpse of Tomorrow — Aoi & Ren's University Invitation

Whispers and Winds of Change

The sun filtered softly through the cherry blossoms outside the classroom window. Spring had officially arrived, but the usual rhythm of school felt altered somehow — lighter, more electric. Students buzzed with rumors, updates, and the latest gossip, though none more talked about than the recent Tokyo Tech National Hackathon.

In the back corner of the classroom, Ren sat at his desk, head buried in his notebook. Though he kept his expression neutral, his thoughts were anything but quiet. The echoes of that intense competition, the final showdown, the lights, the chaos, Aoi's warm smile when they won — it all still played on a loop in his head.

He glanced sideways.

Aoi sat next to him, chin propped on her hand, doodling abstract flowcharts in her notebook. Despite the usual glitter stickers on her tablet and the faint shimmer in her nails, her expression held a rare calm. She looked... peaceful. Or maybe that's how she made him feel.

They hadn't spoken much that morning, but Ren didn't mind. Lately, silence between them had become something comfortable, like the gentle hum of a laptop fan — constant, low, reliable. More than friends? Maybe. But still not lovers. Something in between — a delicate thread still weaving itself.

As if sensing his gaze, Aoi turned and smiled faintly. "You're staring again, Mr. Hacker."

Ren blinked and looked away, cheeks warm. "N-no I wasn't."

She giggled. "Sure, sure. That hoodie isn't helping your stealth stat, you know."

Before Ren could recover, the intercom crackled above them.

"Attention all students. We would like to congratulate two of our very own, Ren Ichikawa and Aoi Tachibana, for their incredible achievement in winning the Tokyo Tech National Hackathon. They will now represent our school as guest speakers at the upcoming regional tech forum!"

A rush of murmurs spread across the classroom.

"Wait, that Ren?"

"The guy who naps through math class?"

"No way! Tachibana-san, sure — she's always been good at computers. But him?"

From the other side of the room, Katsuro scoffed loudly. "Must've just ridden her coattails."

Aoi's eyes narrowed, but Ren gently shook his head. He was used to it. But today, something in him refused to just stay quiet.

"I've been entering national hackathons since first year," Ren said calmly, voice steady. "I just didn't advertise it."

The room fell silent.

Even the teacher paused at the door.

Aoi tilted her head, impressed. It was the first time Ren had ever publicly acknowledged his skills — a spark of quiet pride radiating from him. The room buzzed again, but this time with cautious awe.

That afternoon, as they walked down the hallway together, the spring sun casting long shadows against the floor, Aoi nudged his shoulder. "That was cool, you know."

Ren scratched the back of his neck. "I didn't mean to be."

"I know," she said. "But it's okay to own your brilliance sometimes."

They stopped at the shoe lockers. Students still cast glances at them — some with surprise, some with envy. The whispers didn't bother Ren as much anymore. Not with Aoi by his side.

Just as they were about to head out, a staff member came running up.

"Ichikawa-san, Tachibana-san — the university selection results are out. Your recommendations from Tokyo Tech went through. You've both been accepted."

Aoi gasped. "W-wait, what?"

The man smiled. "You're in. Congratulations — top tech program in the country."

For a moment, the hallway froze. A thousand thoughts collided in Ren's head. All the nights he'd stayed up building systems, writing code, dreaming of labs with robotic arms and AI platforms — it was real now. The door had finally opened.

Aoi's hands shot up into the air as she laughed. "YES!! WE DID IT!"

She spun toward Ren, eyes gleaming with joy, and for a second he thought she might hug him. Instead, she paused, her hands awkwardly halfway up, and lowered them again, blushing faintly.

Ren smiled at her restraint. "We really did."

They walked together to the train station, their bags heavy with laptops and textbooks but their hearts impossibly light. A gentle breeze caught Aoi's hair, and as she tucked it behind her ear, Ren couldn't help but admire how her smile never really faded.

"I always wanted to go there," Aoi said, her voice soft as they stood on the platform. "My parents worked with the university on some AI defense research years ago. That place… it means something to me."

Ren looked at her, surprised. "You never told me that."

Aoi shrugged. "I don't usually talk about serious stuff unless I trust someone."

Ren nodded, understanding. "Same."

A moment of quiet passed between them.

Then Aoi leaned on the rail and asked, "Do you ever wonder what it would be like… if we weren't just friends?"

Ren's heart skipped.

The train's roar filled the air, drowning out the silence that followed her question. When he turned to answer, she was already walking toward the doors, her voice trailing behind her.

"Let's make a pact," she said, without looking back. "No matter what happens, we'll tell the truth. Especially when it matters."

Ren watched the doors close between them.

His reflection stared back at him from the glass — hoodie, glasses, tired eyes — but behind it, he saw something changing. A quiet confidence, slowly blooming.

He whispered to himself, "Deal."
