Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: Ambush

[3rd POV]

On the evening streets of Gotham, a light rain gently washed over the hazy glow of neon lights.

"Bang!"

"Bang!"

Claude looked angry and scared.

He was holding a pistol and hiding behind a big round table with Bridget, but both of them didn't look friendly like usual.

Their faces were tense, and veins popped on their foreheads, making them look really fierce.

"You bastard! How dare you cause trouble at the Red Dragon Restaurant! You're all dead meat!"

At the entrance of the restaurant, a group of burly, heavily armed men was fighting in a gunfight with the workers.

It was obvious they hadn't come in with a reservation.

One of the attackers, wearing a top hat and a suit, shouted loudly at Claude from the doorway.

"Cobblepot send his regards! This is what you get for trying to mess with the Iceberg Lounge!"

The sounds of gunfire, shouting, and maniacal laughter filled the air. The peaceful, rainy night was suddenly full of noise and chaos.

Hiding in a corner, Tony glanced at the deformed surface of a wooden dining table that had been shot with bullets in front of him.

Luckily, a layer of solid steel underneath was shot. Then, Tony calmly pulled a stick of Pocky from a pack and put it in his mouth.

'No wonder the tables in this place are so heavy. It takes a few people just to move one! I guess they were getting ready for something like this.'

Ever since arriving in Gotham, Tony hadn't had a single peaceful day.

If it wasn't a robbery, it was a shooting out.

The most "peaceful" day he could recall was when he performed an exorcism on a haunted car with keys.

'This damn city... the people who live here are really 'lucky'. They'll remember it for the rest of their lives.'

He muttered sarcastically.

The restaurant where he worked was always getting strange and dangerous customers.

Last time, it was Two-Face, Harvey Dent. This time, it was Cobblepot's henchmen.

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot was far better known by his supervillain alias, The Penguin.

The Iceberg Lounge was one of his businesses and appeared on the surface to be a popular, legitimate restaurant.

In fact, it served as a front for money laundering and various illicit financial operations, as well as a hub for his dealings with other gangs.

It was clear that when his henchman shouted about "messing with the Iceberg Lounge," he probably wasn't referring to stealing customers.

He meant messing with their private criminal operations.

Normally, Penguin wouldn't dare to send people to cause trouble like this, but Batman had recently been cracking down on the Falcone family.

While that was happening, Wayne Enterprises had taken the opportunity to seize and purge many of the businesses Falcone used to control and started cleaning them up.

As a result, the Falcone Family became desperate and started retaliating by squeezing Cobblepot's operations.

In the middle of all the crazy gunfire, Tony sighed. He took a bite of the Pocky stick in his mouth and checked the cross necklace he wore under his clothes.

It still showed he had nine "lives" left, which meant he wasn't in real danger yet.

He looked out the window at the gentle rain falling outside. He really wanted to do right now was go home, order some fast food, and watch his favorite shows while enjoying the view.

Honestly, Tony had no idea if he'd even be able to finish work on time and leave the restaurant safely tonight.

The supervisor spotted him huddled behind a table and thought he'd been frozen in fear.

"Tony, don't just sit there like an idiot—start shooting!"

"I can't aim that much!"

Tony wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but it seemed like the supervisor froze for a moment the instant he shouted those words.

"What kind of nonsense are you talking about?"

The supervisor shouted with wide eyes, "This is Gotham!"

"Can't there be one person in Gotham who doesn't know how to aim?"

Tony protested, "The Waynes didn't even carry guns when they went out that night!"

"You should've moved to Star City while you had the chance!"

The supervisor growled through gritted teeth, "You take the safety off and pull the trigger!"

Fumbling with the weapon in a panic, Tony finally managed to figure out how to operate his gun.

The supervisor watched as he hesitantly aimed for a long while, only to watch him lower the gun again.

"I might hit something in the restaurant."

"Who gives a damn about that?!"

The supervisor, who had already been watching with frustration, saw him drop the gun again and felt his blood explode.

"These tables and chairs are meant to get shot at in emergencies like this! Just shoot the damn bastards!"

"You said it yourself!"

He immediately aimed over the table and pulled the trigger.

"Bang!"

The shot hit the big chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

"Crash—"

The giant crystal chandelier came crashing down and shattered on the floor, sending shiny pieces flying everywhere like sparkly gems exploding in the air.

"Tony!!"

The supervisor's furious roar suddenly rang out, snapping him out of the shout.

"Do you have any idea how expensive that chandelier was?!"

"I was aiming at the table, I swear!"

"Yeah? Well, unless that table was hanging from the ceiling, you've got the aim of a stormtrooper!"

The supervisor wasn't even that mad at first, but after hearing Tony's ridiculous explanation, he felt a sharp pain in his chest.

Now that the big chandelier was gone, the room was almost pitch black.

The only light came from the misty glow of streetlights outside and a tiny bit of moonlight peeking through the clouds.

That side of the room was basically in the shadows now.

In the dark, Penguin's henchmen paused as they heard the noise of the supervisor drop to the ground.

For a moment, they looked at each other in confusion.

"Did their boss just go down?"

"Yeah, I think so. So… do we keep shooting or what?"
