The screeches of forty armored subterranean beasts tore through the dusty afternoon air at the Hospital Rail Junction as gravel sprayed violently across the tracks.
Massive, chitin-plated predators known as Tunnel Carrion tore through the granite roadbed, spitting high-velocity stone needles that ricocheted loudly off the steel rails.
Behind them, the fifty-car armored grain train thundered along the mountain viaduct, rapidly approaching the junction at over one hundred miles per hour.
"Look at the ground tremors beneath the main switching platform," Jax warned, his fingers hovering over his shock pistols as the ballast gravel shifted.
"The seismic monitors show forty distinct biological signatures tunneling directly toward the track foundations," Jax reported, checking his handheld scanner.
"If those beasts damage the primary switching gear, the train will derail directly into the hospital supply yard!" Jax shouted, pointing toward the crowded triage tents.
