Chapter 85 – A Complicated Night

A few hours later, they found an abandoned cabin. It had supplies left behind by campers who had passed through before the apocalypse began, so everything inside would be useful to them now.

Riya took care of lighting a discreet fire using a can filled with artificial materials that burned without producing smoke—saving them the trouble of finding firewood.

"It's going to be a problem tonight. The cold could kill us," Riya muttered as she prepared some food she had found in the backpacks of the people they had killed.

The supplies had clearly been stolen. Those who had been searching for Tomas had murdered an entire shelter of people just to steal their food and water. It felt like poetic justice had caught up to them, so no one felt guilty about eating stolen food.

"I never thought survival would look like this—living outside the care of others," Riya sat next to Alan, who was resting as much as he could to recover from his wound.

According to their plan, after hiding the truck, Clementine was to sleep in the room where the food was stored so she could feel safer.

Nowadays, trust was a rare thing, and Riya understood the girl's need for space.

"As soon as I recover, we'll leave this place."

Alan would need at least a few days of rest before he could move. He also needed to contact Daniel. But when he picked up the radio, he discovered it was broken.

This could've been a problem, but Alan didn't consider it one—there were plenty of ways to get back.

Night had fallen. Riya sat beside Alan and murmured, "I never imagined we'd be in a situation like this… but I like it. Are you sure you're okay?"

"I think I have a bit of a fever, but I'll be fine…"

"Let me help you."

Central Base.

"What do you mean they're not sending a rescue operation?" Claire was stunned when she heard from Victor that no one was being sent to retrieve them.

"Claire, these are Alan's orders—and this involves far more lives than you can imagine." Joel knew more than he should, so he tried to help Madison understand.

"He has no right to decide that. If no one's going after them, then I will," Claire declared, immediately walking off to prepare and head out.

John, the calmest one at the base, remained silent for a moment before saying, "I'll try to calm her down."

"I hope you do."

"Have they made contact?"

"Yes, they're safe."

"I hope someone goes for her soon—or we'll have to do it ourselves."

Joel nodded and said, "I'll be the first to defy Alan's orders if it means saving him."
