Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 - Momentum

Ryan stared out the jet window, the Aegean sun now a memory behind them. Leah was dozing quietly beside him, her hand lightly resting on his arm. Despite the turbulence of their last night in Greece, something had shifted. Trust had been restored. The silence between them now felt comfortable—not empty.

He glanced at his laptop, spreadsheets and reports open like a sea of numbers. The board meeting was in five days. They had goals to tighten, initiatives to expand, and a valuation to push past the ten-billion mark. The future was calling.

But his mind lingered on the way Leah had looked at him the morning after he proposed. Not with rejection, but with raw honesty. And love. The kind that wanted forever, but only if it was built on something that could last.

---

Back at headquarters, Phoenix Fund Holdings had transformed in their absence. The leadership team had implemented the revised growth plans, with sector heads streamlining operations. Ryan, Leah, and Dylan returned to a flurry of strategy sessions and planning meetings.

Dylan met them at the elevator with his usual lopsided grin, two coffees in hand.

Dylan: "There they are! Santorini lovebirds back from the land of olives and endless sunsets. Did you two elope or just come back with matching tans?"

Ryan (chuckling): "Neither. But it was a great trip. Needed more sleep and less wine."

Leah (grinning): "Speak for yourself. I could live on Greek wine."

Dylan (teasing): "So, no Greek proposal, huh? Or did you leave that part out?"

There was a beat of silence between Ryan and Leah, an unspoken moment passing between them. Dylan caught it, his grin softening.

Dylan: "Hey. Whatever it is, you two look... solid. Like stronger."

Leah: "We are."

Ryan: "We figured out a few things."

Dylan nodded, giving Leah a fist bump.

Dylan: "Good. 'Cause we're gonna need to be stronger than ever. The game's heating up, and the board wants to see teeth."

The three of them stepped into their shared conference suite, and for the first time, Leah realized just how natural it felt—the rhythm, the banter, the shared purpose. Dylan wasn't just Ryan's best friend. He was becoming her close friend too.

---

The first item on the agenda: expansion.

Leah: "We need to be smarter with our risk distribution. Let's lean harder into technology startups and green infrastructure. I'm seeing patterns emerge in mid-tier markets that are ripe for disruption."

Ryan: "Crypto needs a second audit. We're stable, but with more regulation on the horizon, I want us overprepared."

Dylan: "Entertainment arm's getting hot. Valen's pulling through, and that indie label deal you mentioned before? I followed up. They want in on our Vegas show platform."

They moved through agendas, sharper and more collaborative than ever. Dylan had stepped up—no longer just the funny guy or second-in-command. He was pushing deals, managing pressure, and offering insights with clarity.

One day over lunch, the three of them sat at the back terrace, eating salads and laughing at some story Dylan was telling about a failed pitch meeting when they first started out.

Dylan (mock dramatic): "The guy thought I was an intern delivering coffee. I pitched anyway. Didn't get the deal, but I got his number. We own his firm now."

Leah (laughing): "I'm stealing that story."

Ryan: "Let her. She'll make it sound cooler than you ever could."

Dylan: "Rude. Accurate. But rude."

The camaraderie was natural now. Comfortable.

That afternoon, Phoenix Fund launched an ambitious initiative called Ignite, aimed at incubating promising businesses in underserved communities. Leah would lead the division, building a team of visionaries.

Meanwhile, Dylan pursued a promising AR gaming integration, and Ryan closed land deals in Nevada and Utah for long-term festival and event grounds.

---

One night, the three of them stayed late at HQ, lounging in the executive lounge overlooking the city.

Leah: "Do you think we'll ever slow down?"

Ryan: "Only if you're beside me."

Dylan (raising his drink): "I'll third-wheel this rocket ship all the way to the moon."

Leah: "You mean co-pilot."

Dylan (grinning): "Better."

There was a quiet moment. Then a shared laugh.

Leah (thinking): This is right. This team. This energy. We're unstoppable.

Ryan (thinking): I used to think I could only trust myself. But with them, I finally believe in something bigger than me.

Dylan (thinking): This is the family I never expected. I'll go to war for them.

As they left the office, walking into the cool autumn night, their steps fell into rhythm.

Ryan: "We know what we want. Now we just have to take it."
