"I'm not sure about forgiveness," I said calmly. "Based on my humble background, if someone made a mistake, people believed they should be burned at the stake or thrown into the ocean from a ship."
I shrugged. "I've never actually done that to anyone before, but … maybe you could be my first guest."
Even though it was subtle, I could clearly see the color slowly drain from Mirelda's face, turning her skin as pale as paper. I wasn't sure if she was more afraid of losing her job or terrified that I might actually burn her at the stake.
Honestly, burning someone at the stake had never crossed my mind before. But maybe … it's something to consider in the future.
"Milady, please forgive me!" Mirelda repeated those words again and again, like she was chanting some desperate mantra. She dropped to her knees and pressed her forehead against the floor. "I promise I'll watch my mouth! I'll never say something that can hurt your feelings!"
